New Topic - Electric Bills

How does that Intermatic timer works? not sure what it does. Thanks. I'm really concern about this crazy power bills mine is 297 this month and I'm not even using MHs, two icecaps 660 and 4 bulbs are 40W (overriding them) and 2 110Actincs. my house is 2100 sq. living space and I keep my AC 77/78. Man! I need to buy salt now :)

I am thinking about dropping my halides and getting 5x30W normal output bulbs with an electronic ballast to overdrive them.

150W vs 578W...that should help a little. If my tank wasn't drilled, I would drop my sump, skimmer and return pump and get a canister filter and fill it full of chemical media. Then the tank would draw just over 200W at any given point. I would probably add a powerhead but that wouldn't be too much.

Hi, i worked for FPL for two years before i left a few months ago i was in marketing/ Energy saving department. The guys you talk to on the phone or thay go to your house.

The time of day program- Is really meant for night clubs and things like that.

Water heater- It costs more to heat the whole tank every morning then to just keep it at the same temp. If you really want to save on your water heating bill you should buy an on demand water heater( Tank Less ) It actually used more kwh but it saves you in the long run about 15 % because it heats the water right when you use it. The down side to this is that they have a limited amount of water they can heat at a time, so it isnt good for larger familys.

I can awnser tons of questions about why bills are going up and or energy conservation. If anyones intrested PM me :O

Wow, then I need to install a glitter ball and a dance pole so I can benefit from the new meter if that's the only way it will benefit me.

Voltekker please shed some light, who do we complain to?
Any tips on energy saving is welcome, glad you can join us !

Everyone I talked to here disagrees on the water heat costing more to heat it then keep it always active. Several people have added a timer and have noticed nice drops in their electric bill. A water heater that has been inactive for 12 hours only takes about 20 minutes to heat up. I don't see how it uses that much in 20 minutes to keep the temperature stable throughout the night.

The tankless is good however, don't be fooled by the lower price ones. A good one is not the 299.00 special at Home Depot. You are looking at around 5 to 700 dollars for a good one. And if you want 2 showers to be able to run and have some hot water elsewhere, you are looking at about 1000. I've checkem them out and the cost savings just weren't justified yet.

I guess the water heating thing depends on how big your water heater is. Keeping 20 gallons at the same tempature all the time should be cheaper then turning your water heater on only when you need it.Because it takes a longer period of time to heat all 20 gallons then it does to keep the same 20 gallons at a stable tempature. The heating element is on longer. If you use your water heater only once a day i can see how your right.

lol true. I guess it depends on the size which is true. Perhaps that is true for apartments? I don't know, I'm just a IT techy person :). Mine is a 40 gallon tank but when I hook it up this weekend, I will definetly post back and see what the drop is.

Do you recommend a tankless one that is reasonable in cost that does in fact work good?

Jay...Its hard to say if what you will see is accurate. I mean, outside temp, rain and so many other factors will help to lower or raise your electricity. So even if your bill is a lot lower next month, that might be because of all the rain we are getting or because August is a hotter month than Sept...so on.

You can call up your provider and get not only rate and power increases for you each month in comparison to the previous months, but also compare them to where you were the year before at the same time. Granted there will always be environmental factors, you can find out if there is significantly higher rates than the averages.

Does anyone has natural gas appliances rather than electric? I wonder over time how much cheaper it would be in the long run? I remember when I lived in NJ everyone had gas utilities ie oven, water heater, dryer, and heater.

We have gas appliances, we just switched over to gas. My dad said it cooks a lot better. Him and my mom went to expo and had a field day, bought all viking equipment and boy do i love to cook. Dont know if it is cheaper in the long run though. I will have to ask.

With ours you don't have to call. They have it online so I can compare. It's pretty inaccurate to compare from year to year imo when I checked it. I have access to all information anyway but the information on people's personal bills are easy to see for each person.

its all about the cost off natural gas seeing most power plant use it to make the electricty and the the cost off gass is up up and up

Ok im back to awnser a few more things before bed.

Tankless systems have dropped in price there are good ones out but i really wouldnt recommend it for a large family.

The cost of natuaral gas has gone up alot and so has the cost of crude its pretty much the reason everyone has seen there bills going up. As far as florida goes and the ammount you pay per kwh. The Utility companies cannot charge you whatever they want. We are a regulated state so any changes have to be approved by the fpsc and if its for an increase it better be a great reason.

Also adding the timer might make a diffrence but like another poster pointed out, september could be a cooler month. If you really wanna compare id do july to august next year. Both are over all hot months.

Also AC settings. FPL has a recommended setting of 78 when your home. It isnt hot its what i have my house at. If your gonna be gone for more then 5 hours drop your ac down to about 82-85.(Recomended). If you own your own home check your insulation, it does make some of a diffrence.

We all have fish tanks here and we all know that the lights use alot of electricty. If you really wanna cut back take an hour of your light cycle.

If you guys tell me what you do and dont do maybe i can guide you. A really good tip is to use ceiling fans whenever possible. They are so damn cheap to run its like 7 dollars a month. Running it 24/7.

Im still looking for some hard core numbers for you on the prices of fuel. I will be posting it. Im not sure what Progress charges For electricity either or if they had a rate increase but like i said before any changes have to be approved by the fpsc.

So page 8 of the Rates Schedules: http://www.fpl.com/rates/pdf/electric_tariff_section8.pdf

says that Time of use charge for Off Peak hours is 2.143 cents per KWH. On Peak charge is 7.431 cents per KWH. The off peak is just a bit more than mine but the On Peak is 4 cents less than mine so I don't see why any of you aren't taking advantage of it. PLUS the On Peak hours are only 8 hours per day leaving the other 16 hours of the day as the Off Peak. 6-10 am are the on peak and also 6-10 pm. All other hours are Off Peak including all weekend and some holidays that even include Mondays. Why don't you guys and gals take advantage of this??????????????????????????????????????????? The bill I just got today was no less than $20 cheaper than last month and that is only because there was a mid month adjustment for changing the meter, so there was a period of normal charges and then also a period of 19 days of Time of Use charge. Next month will be alot less.

i dont think those prices include the fuel charge. In january there was a fuel increase at fpl. What they did was seperate the the actual kwh charge the fuel charge. That might just be the kwh charge.
