Hello.

I am setting up a new 75gl tank and was wondering what powerhead is recommended. Looking to add 1 or 2 in the tank for circulation. I have been out of the hobby for 5-6 years so was just looking for guidance as to what the latest trend is towards powerhead models.

Any help is much appreciated.
Thanks

really the only limitations would be how much you want to spend :-) !

There are a number of good brands out there. Tunze and Vortech are great, but do come with a large price tag. Gyres are something to think about. Jebao is popular, seems to do the job....quality is always a topic of discussion on here. Hydor and Marineland round out the group.

Things to think about
- budget?
- how much flow gph are you looking for? different corals have likes/dislikes
- constant flow or the ability to provide variable flow / wave maker?

Personally, in my 120, I have a smaller Tunze and a Jebao. One is a constant flow and the other is a wave maker.

Hope this helps in some way....

In my current setup - a 120DT/40 sump mixed reef (mostly SPS) for in-tank circulation I use a pair of Gyre 250's on the back glass that max out at ~60%, a pair of 1500gph koralia's in the back corners pointed up and in, and a 850gph koralia on one side, down low and as far back as I can put it that is just there to ensure good flow behind the rocks.

IMHO, the koralias work well and seem to last a long time if cleaned occasionally, especially considering their price point. The Gyre's are almost overkill in my tank - If I were to turn them all the way up there would be a standing wave over the front of the tank. I'm pretty sure the wife would frown upon that!
