Hello,
here is a new video from my mantis shrimps. It called "Mantis Shrimps in Action". It took a long time, good software and much expierience to render this smooth slow motions, but this animals are still to fast for normal video cameras.

I hope you like it.

Mantis Shrimps in Action

Both animals in the video have exactly the same size (9 cm) and it seens that the G. chiragra has more power than the O. scyllarus.
But i think it depends on the hit rate. The peacock hits the crab eleven times in 5 seconds and the Chiragra only three times in 5 seconds. Much more time to contract the muscles. The result is a powerful strike.

Nice video.

The G. chiragra sure does seem to hit harder, I also notice it uses both striking apendages at once, whereas the other one seemed to hit with one fist then the other.

The Gonodactylaceus glabrous was a wrong order. I want one O. scyllarus and this animal was delivered. For some suppliers every mantis shrimp is a O. scyllarus. ;-)

The animal lived over 3 years and was very shy.
