Hey everyone I just purchased a 34 gal Red Sea Max. I am looking in getting involved in your reef club so give what does it involve.

Also, What is a good way to make sure that everything is clean and safe. it had black sand that seemed like it had a lot of stuff in it...thinking about mixing in some white sand...

it is cycling now with some live rock

I definitely recommend becoming a member. I've met some wonderful and VERY helpful people through the club.

As for the sand not being clean, is it used?

I think I would give it a few days to settle to see how you like it before doing anything you cannot undo (i.e. take back out the white sand). When you put in dry sand it can really cloud up the water of a new tank for a day or two. Then if it is not totaly clear I would turn on the filters and let your mechanical media take up the rest. I have never had black sand in a tank, but I bet it will look good...unfortuantely most of us are too impatient (especially me) and want everything to look great immediately. So once again, try to hang in there and let the dust settle (so to speak)....I am a newbe to the club as well...welcome. I also added a 29 Cube a few months ago......

If you dont mind redoing the aquascape and you prefer the black sand, I would say remove the sand and place in a bucket. then fill bucket the rest of the way with either old tank water right before a water change or freshly made saltwater. Put your arm in there and stir the heck outta the sand so that the debirs becomes suspended in the water and immediately pour the water offtil its mostly just sand left in the bucket. then repeat this process three or four times until u get alotta of the debris and detrius out. Hey if you dont have any premade saltwater or any old stuff to use in the cleaning process, I am about to do a 50 gal water change on my 225. I can save a few buckets of the old water to use to clean your sand. By using the saltwater/tank water you will preserve the beneficial bacteria already thriving in the sand. Pm me if you need the water.

Welcome! A lot has already been said about the Club, but really, it's the people and shared experiences we all share. Nothing beats the one-on-one personal dealings you'll get, that are not part of RC, which... is a pretty fine board!

P.S. - Don't forget to add some "Stability" from Seachem with a New tank or water change.

After your tank cycles shoot me a PM... I need to clear out some corals and have a few that can help you get started (free of course)..

Welcome aboard. We are very pleased to see someone else get into the hobby and I think you will find a lot of folks that are willing to help you along the "journey".

The first thing I would like to say is "be patient" that is(or was for me) one of the things that was hardest when I first started. Letting things cycle (sounds like you are off to a good start there) and not rushing out and spending a lot of time and wasted money on livestock until you are really ready.

Look at some other peoples tanks, and decide what you want and start slowly and you will be happier in the long run. This hobby is one that has an awful lot of people that jump in too fast, and spend a lot of money on fish and corals before they are ready and when it does not work out get frustrated and quit. Take your time with a plan and patience and you will be rewarded with a great hobby you can keep for the rest of your life.

When you are ready to start stocking your tank, I too have some soft corals that I will gladly share with a new reef club member for free!!

Good luck, and please let me know if I can help.

New Free Coral Policy

New Free Coral Policy

Wow...I guess I missed that welcome basket of "free corals" when I joined in December (:hmm3:LOL)....you don't hear that often Stansfield, so you better jump on that wagon. You should ask when the next meeting is to collect on their generous offers. I don't think they have had one since I joined so I don't know how often they meet. Heck, if they do I will give you some "free corals" too....there should be a policy that all new members receive "free" corals at their first meeting from all current members (effective Dec 2010 and forward)....I guess that last comment will keep me from being invited so grab a couple of free corals for me too.....

Hey, I LOVE This!

I think that ALL New Members should get free donations (from Existing Members) for joining the Club! (I'm SOOoooo Serious!)

(Oh by the way, I quit but just Joined the Club....)

nice try Mako...the evidence shows you are a member since Jan 2008....so you better start fragging those free corals....and then you can quit. But wait, if you quit and rejoin then I guess I would technically owe you a free donation as I would then be the current member....umh....okay, well make me two free frags off a coral and you give me one and you keep the other as a free donation from me...so we are even.....

How many members do we have? I may need a new tank to handle all my new free corals.....

Ha ha... actually, Mr. Bill (ducklabdad) is keeper of the stats.

I'm just the marketing dude.

Let me explain something to you. Um, I am not "Mr. Lebowski". Bill is "Mr. Lebowski".

I'm the Dude. So that's what you call me. You know, that or, uh, His Dudeness, or uh, Duder, or El Duderino if you're not into the whole brevity thing.

wow you guys are great. I have added some stability to my tank and it seems to being do good. everything seems ok to start adding frags and fish.

it wuld be cool if we could have a meeting....if you have one let me know!
