I am thinking of a clam but want some info. First I see people feeding DT's. Is this needed? I thought they were photosynthetic. And instead of DT's would they feed off of Cyclop-eeze? Thanks.

Do you know what clam you want, or need some advice to help determine which? DT's is a brand of live phytoplankton many people use to feed clams and other filter-feeding animals. Clams don't always necessarily need phyto to survive, because ,yes, they are photosynthetic. Nonetheless, it is beneficial. I'm not sure that a clam would feed off of Cyclop-eeze. Clams only utilise food of a certain micron size and smaller. My guess is that the particle sizes wouldn't be fit for consumption.

Looking at a squamosa to start. I have used DT's before but I was just curious about the feeding. Cyclop-eeze is definitely bigger than phyto. Wasn't sure if it was too big or not. Have been doing some reading just trying to get all the info I can before I jump in. This was just a question I could not get an answer to. Thanks.

Clams do feed, and the ones under 3" need regular, direct feedings of Dts or other live phyto (you are correct, cyclop-eeze is too big) Above 3" and they usuall get enough food from stuff in the tank.

Yes, they are photosynthetic :) They are among the most light demanding. Put the maximas and croceas close to your halides :)

Yep the fellows hit it on the nail good information given, Clams are both filter feederes and photosynthetic.....Like Peabody stated small clams need to be feed live phytoplankton, such as DT's, hopefully soon Ill be culturing phyto plankton much cheaper that way. Hte baby clams dont have much mantle the colorfull fleash part we see....the smaller the mantle the more dependent the clam is on green water....the larger the more efficent it is at gathering light for photosymthesis....all in surface area of the mantel....as for placement maximas like sand..croceas like rocks...they also like moderate flow, and the light system you have will determin what distance they are from the lights, at the moment im running 250DE 10k ushios so my new clams area all going on the sand bed...in a 75 gallon tank...

If you are getting your clam from the LFS( i have 4 LFS in the area so i have a large selection) make sure that the clams react to light and movement. also make sure the mantles are fully extended and teh colors are not pale. also ask questons i have a list of questions i ask
1. what does it eat
2. what water peramiters does the animal like
3. what lighting does the animal like
4. what temprature does it prefer
5. what is the animal's temperment to other animals
6. how sencitive they animal is
7. how much movement does the animal like
The number two question i ask the sales man is
8. what is your(the sales person) expereance with the animal
If they cannot answer this question then find someone in the store who does.
The number one rule for me when i'm buying at teh LFS is KNOW THE ANSWER TO ALL THESE QUESTIONS BEFOR YOU ASK THE SALES PERSON! if you know the answer to these questions then you will have a better sucess rate with your live stock, and you will know which LFS is truthful and which ones just want a sale.
you are doing the righ tthing buy asking ppl who own these animals questions. keep it up and do more research:D
