NewB Question about QT..

i've read in the book mentioning that good QT need to have an established biofilter(using bioballs).. Which mean cycled after some periods..

But my question is,
1). when i use Cupramine to cure the disease, does it kill the bacteries in the bio filter?

2) If i'm going to put the Fish in QT, can it survive in the tank that doesnt have established bio filter for let say 6 weeks?

3) Let say i have 1 fish in 30 gall QT, how long before the ammonia start to build up and poisoning the fish(assuming the biofilter not established yet)?

Thx :)

1, yes but use hypo much better for the fish.

2. maybe but q/t is supposed to be stress free.

3, hard to say but quickly.

look at the home made filter in the stickies quick and simple and use some patience.

first off use water from your current tank which will mran water alrdy with the basteria you are talking about also i suggest always keeping a extra sponge in your sump so if you have to set up a qt you can throw that sponge in your hang on and there ya go you got your self a bacteria filled ready biofiltered qt tank ;) with little to no cycling ;) and i suggest hypo as well as i ahve foudn soo far the fish is much more stress free make sure you have a refractometer and shoot for a little under 1.009 so you safe from evap ;)

hmm my current QT is kinda warm, it has 30+ degree celcius, im afraid i couldn't control the salinity well..

anyway thx for advise.. i think i'm gonna try hypo.. and see what happen..

does hypo treat velvet??

no hypo doesnt treat velvet i believe formalin will work for that. 30 degress celcius isnt that warm you need your qt around same temp as your display and also unless you ahve arefractometer it will be usless because i have one and i still think the clibration is ever so slightly off so i make sure that my sg is just under 1.009 or just under 13 ppt either way works good.

hmm instead of formalin, i think i'll stick with cupramine..
its kinda hard to get a formalin here (ndonesia)..

my main tank has around 26-27 degree (im using chiller) but i dont use chiller for my QT.. so there'll be 3-4 degree differences..

i believe it'll be ok given i give em good acclimation process from QT to main tank..

i just need to be sure that new fishes dont bring any disease to main tank..

Thx

:)

ok so yoru using it for your new fish thats good ;) what is 30 degrees celcius in F? hmm did u try to turn down your heater? so at night in the qt the water should lower in temp and eventually youll find what the heater should be set at. i hope this helps but im guessing your 3 degress difference is a big jump for the fish but a slow acclimation would be like a gallon of water in a bucket and your fish then slowly drip acclimate them over a half a day or so. that is what i try to do for fish im putting into my qt with 1.009 ;) also i dont believe that copramine will do a thing for velvet but terryB would know.

its around 86 deg F, @my home country its summer everyday.. around 27-30 degree Celcius almost everytime.. so water temp dun change much around 29-31 Celc at most..

in my opinion treating velvet is much more difficult than ich, i've cured many fishes from ich but almost none from velvet..

the fish can look OK in the morning and die in the afternoon..

hmm how dangerous, combining UV sterilizer with Cupramine?

thanks andrew for the backup ;) and 86 degress in hot wow.

it is hot but localy caught fish must be used to hot temps i would imagine.

30 degree is kinda normal for temp in tropical area,

i've tried to give fan, aerating but still gives u 29 the best..

i dont want to waste that much of money for chiller in my QT..
:(

its kinda hard to get formalin here cause it's kinda restricted and most of the LFS dont sell it..

so true andrew, also i would try to keep it at 29 if you can, but yes the fish would adjust like im sure it gets warm in mid summer mid day on the reef for sure expecially those more shallow dwelling fish ;)
