newbie checking in for the 1st time

Hi everyone!

I am new to these boards and new to the hobby. I've read a ton or posts and articles and feel entirely confused about what I should be doing. Two months ago I setup a 45 gallon reef ready glass tank with 50 lbs of Tonga live rock, 30 gallon sump, 3" of sand, a Top Fathom 110a skimmer, 200w of atentic/10k lights and an external Little Giant 3 pump for circulation. If anyone is living in the Southern Illinois region (Carbondale) and wants to stop by my place to check out my system, I could sure use some helpful advice.

For now, maybe you could help me by answering some of my urgent concerns:

1) How much water flow is too much? I have about 1100 g/h running through my 45 gallon tank. Is it too much or not enough for a reef tank?

2) I have about 15 turbo snails, 10 Nassarius Snails, 15 hermit crabs, 1 emerald crab, 1 brital star, 1 sand sifting sea cucumber and 2 cleaner clams. Is this an adequate clean-up crew or am I over doing it?

3) How do I know if my protein skimmer is working properly? It is producing some bubbles that are flowing into the collection cup, but it doesn't seem like much. Over about 3 days, I collect about 1/2 inch of dark green liquid in the collection cup.

4) How can I tell when my water quality is good enough to start adding corals? All my tests are well under the acceptable limits, but they are not absolutely zero yet. What else besides whats included in my basic Master Test Kit should I be checking?

5) Every day I notice that the snails are leaving a trail of detris all over my rock. I’ve been using a power head to blow it off the rock, and doing this really creates cloudy mess in my tank. But after about an hour, it seems like this snail “poop” just settles back down on the rocks again. Should I worry about cleaning up this stuff, or just leave it? I am worried that this stuff may cause ammonia build up in the water. Is there something that will eat this stuff that I can add to my tank. Maybe I need to get rid of some snails?

6) I have seen many posts about phosphate reactors being the best solution for controlling algae. Should I be considering setting one of these up now? What about ozone, ultraviolet light, mechanical filtration or the million other things people are using to clean their water? What is really essential for a qualit system that I need to add to my tank setup right away?

I better stop there before I make someone angry with all my stupid questions.

Thank you for your feedback.

First, welcome.

Lets see if I can try and answer a few

1. Flow looks fine

2. I would worry about the cuk, if it dies it could poisen the tank

3. If the junk in the cup makes you want to puke, its working.

4. People smarted than I will answer this one. Please list what you test for and the readings.

5. I dont think its snail poop, the snails are disturbing the brown cyno that is normal. Dont sweat it

6. What is best for your water? At this point, time. Seriously. Maybe run some carbon, but dont go overboard with all that other stuff right now.

You cant ask too many questions, but you are NEVER going to get your post count up. Each question should be a seperate post

:D

Just kidding!!!

Bottom line, take a deep breath, relax, and know that nothing good happens fast in this hobby

Good luck

1. Good enough flow depending on what corals you want.

2. Clean-up is fine. Not all cucumbers are poisonous. Figure out what kind you have first. Is it the ugly, turd looking yellow/brown one? If so you're safe.

3. Just tune the water/air levels in the skimmer until you get the most output. It's a guessing game.

4. Get test kits and test water levels - salinity, ph, nitrates, alk? (if you want sps test calcium) that's all i test for

5. to get rid of the detritus get more flow. it's more or less just new tank syndrom. It'll pass, give it time.

6. I have 2 phosphate reactors. one for carbon and one for phosban. If you've got serious algae problems figure out the source. I don't know exactly why I run one. I think I run it because I want to make sure it's at 0.

good luck, take your time.

Welcome to the SLASH forum and to Reef Central Junjokun.

You'll find lots of knowledgeabl and friendly people here and some of them are even mentally stable ...though we have yet to figure out who they may be.:D

Spoken by the head...case. :D

Most of your initial questions have been answered excellently. I would suggest Salifert Test Kits...best bang for the buck and they will not give you erroneous results. Most other test kits will...avoid Aquarium Pharm. kits, I have never had good luck with them.

Thanks for the help!

I am testing Amonia, Nitrite, Nitrate, Ph, Alk and salinity. Should I get a phosphate test? Anything else?

About 1/10th of my tank is filled with cactus plants which I will move to a fuge later. Is this OK for now? Anything better or worse about this algae compared to keeping a different type?

The detris on the rock that I think the snails are leaving looks like a white powder and builds up in every crevice or cave. Someone said this may be a part of new tank syndrome? What is it this stuff exactly?

How exactly do I “clean” my tank? I don’t believe I should disturb my sandbed and my snails are taking care of the algae. Besides keeping my protein skimmer clean, what else should I clean?

The cuk is just holding on to my live rock near the top of my tank, but I expected it to go into the sand and start sifting. Should I be worried about it?

I think my biggest problem right now is micro bubbles. I’ve redone my piping three times, but it just seems to get worse.

So far I've only lost a couple snails and a couple hermit crabs that died the same day they were added to the tank after being transported. I think everything is going good.

the phosphate tests don't catch phosphates so I wouldn't bother with it.

the macro algae is fine in the tank

the stuff on the rocks is probably just sand dust. don't worry. this may also be the reason the cuk is on the rocks. mine hangs on rocks as well.

cleaning the tank - clean pumps occasionally, the skimmer, and do water changes. if any filters or sponges clean them too. some people blow off the rocks when they do water changes.

Welcome aboard!

"How exactly do I “clean” my tank? I don’t believe I should disturb my sandbed and my snails are taking care of the algae. Besides keeping my protein skimmer clean, what else should I clean?"

You don't really "clean" your tank other than use a magnetic scrapper like the mag-float. Let your clean up crew do the "cleaning" of the tank. Other then that just do what JxMetal siad here:

One more thing, There is no such thing as a stupid question. Keep in mind, we didn't wake up one day and know everything there is to know about this hobby. We all were as smart as you are, and asked every little question that came to mind, sometime more than once just to understand. One day their will be a newbie ask your questions, and you'll give these answers. Once again WELCOME and hope you enjoy and find what you need here. Were here to help. :)

Thanks to Junjokun and everyone for the Q and A about many of the same concerns that I have with my new tank. These forums are and incredible information resource.
I still have a nasty algae bloom out of control on my glass and gravel but I have solved my microbubble problem. The source of the air can only be on the intake side of you plumbing. I too redid my plumbing and still had microbubbles until I replaced a shutoff vavle on the intake side. Wow! What a difference no bubbles makes in the tank appearance. My wife's first impression and question was "Did you get new fish?"
Hope that helps.
