So, I was given a bunch of sand and rock (dead) from a friend's leftovers. Anyway, I had the sand and rock starting in a 10 gallon I had in the shed. Then, I went to the LFS the other day and they had a 29 BC (Bio-Cube) that a customer had returned. It was such a good deal we could not pass it up (the wife has always wanted this tank). I think we both like the idea of this tank because it seems simple/basic.
So basically here I sit looking at the 10 gallon with all of the rock and most of the sand in it and the 29 BC with about 2 inches of sand in it. Both have been running for about 4 days now. I put a (dead) shrimp in there to start the N cycle. I have also just finished reading the guides in the newbie forums.
Oh, a little more history, back in 2002/2003 I had a 90 gallon reef setup. Mostly softies, with a few frags of Acro., on top of the brain coral, oysters, and all kind of other stuff I never identified that came in on my live rock. I got as far in as culturing T. Iso, HUFA and rotifers to feed every few days. I also had a 20 Long setup above the 90 as a Mangrove Swamp Refugium. I'd have to say that refuguim was my favorite part of the whole system, especially when the mangrove trees started to grow up to the light and sprout leaves. So anyway, I had most of the bells and whistles for back then and am trying to keep this build simple, but cool.
I really have no plans as far as livestock and bio-type go. I am pretty set on making the 10 gallon an above tank mangrove swamp refugium. That leaves the 29 BC as the main display tank. I will eventually plumb in a sump so I can have all that fancy equipment I will need down there. So I have three questions 1) Has anyone ever plumbed a sump into a 29 Bio_Cube setup? (if so, please give info/links on that), 2) Based on what I have explained, what equipment should I be looking at getting (type of overflow for plumbing in a sump, skimmer, return pump, w/e else might be needed), 3) What are some new trends these days as far as livestock go? (I could do the generic clownfish softies and maybe a goby or two, but what would be something cool or different for the 29?) There will probably be a stomatopod section somewhere, not the main tank though. I can post pictures of the bare tanks if anyone is interested. The lighting on the 29 BC is the old kind, not LED.
