Hi all, I am going to do my best to make the meeting on Sat. Its quite a hike from Godfrey. I just picked up a 180 to replace my 72 and want to set up a sump/refug. The tank came with a Oceanic trickle 250. I believe I will be better off taking out the original bio ball chamber etc.. and sectioning it off myself. What to do???? I have seen some posted drawings on RC but cant find them again.

There is no need to have the bioballs in the chamber if you are going with live rock and setting up a reef tank. There is a sponsor on here whose web site will help you out alot. Look up Melev's reef on the sponsor page. Thanks, Steve

Try to make a quick sketch of the sump you want to modify and post it here. There are several people that can help redesign it to meet your requirements.

On that note, what do you plan to keep in the tank? Lots of fish, coral (softies, sps, lps)?

Hi Fazgood, I have no idea how to make a sketch and post it...also not good at sketch. I currently have 'shrooms, frog spawn, kenya tree, cabbage and candy cane. I am not sure about what they are. I would like to ability to have what ever looks good at the pet store and is not extremely difficult. Obviously I need to lear a lot more about the types of corals before diving in. So, I guess on that note, I want the best sump/refug possible. Thanks

Julie,

I could not find any specs on the Oceanic trickle 250 filter. Can you send me some info on that sump?

Faz

Faz,

Its 30"x18"x18" Basically a glass tank with 2 lower holes close to the back and 1 upper hole at the corner at about 16"
Are you going to be at the meeting tomorrow? Maybe I could just bring the thing with me.

Julie

Julie,

That sounds a bit on the small side for a 180. I will be at the meeting, bring it along and we can take a look. We can discuss your requirements and try to come up with a good solution.

Faz..

Good to meet you and all the others today.

Boy those trips to the lfs can get expensive!! I went to Gateway and came home with a very nice acrylic sump/refug.

So, that DIY part of my project is taken care of. I'm sure there will be other.

Thanks,
Julie

Julie,

Sorry about spending your money... But I think you will be happy and be able to spend more time on the fun stuff and not designing the filter.

How are things progressing?

For me, Designing my own systems set-up's is half the fun of the hobby.

Boy, has this been a learning experience. I thought I was getting a sump/refug together. But when I got to looking at my purchase, I realized it does not have a ref location. I have got to stop listening to others and think things through better!!

On a much brighter note, Oceanic is going to replace my tank. Since they don't make a 180 that does not cost a fortune, I am getting an AGA tank. I just have to wait for Belt's to get it in.

So, until then, things are pretty much at a stand still. One thing I did get done was moving the 72 half way across the room. It was not moving well so I settled on a location because I did not have any help and wanted to get it back together ASAP. Everyone seems happy in the new location. At least the fish. Not me, but I will make due.

I have my new tag line...Red the new Blonde..

After giving some thought to my purchase, I am just going to have an external refug. Which will just mean more water volume. Always a good thing.

Anyone have thoughts on the best way to plumb the two together. I will either be using a 10 gallon tank or the trickle filter tank that already has holes drilled in the side.

Also, anyone have a substitute for the toothed acrylic for the ref overflow? Or know of a place I can get one?

Thanks all,

Julie
really not that dense, just get a little to excited and forget to think at times!!

Julie,

For your overflow you might be able to do a standpipe. Hard to say without seeing it. You can make your own with a trip to the hardware store. Here is one but it is not exactly what I was thinking of.

The fuge can be pretty simple. How much room do you have for it? It does not even have to be see through, you could use one of the 20 gallon barrels but I like to watch the beasties running around in there.
