newbie powerhead question

My tank was origionally a freshwater tank with side by side undergravel filters. now that it is saltwater and I dont use the undergravels, can I use the two powerheads that are for the undergravels, or are those for air only?

Thanks

You can use whatever you want. The question really is....Are they powerful enough to do what I need them to? what kind of PH are they?

I am not exactly sure what kind they are, but they have an air inlet tube from an air pump, and I didnt know if water would flow through those instead. I will check on the brand.

Honestly you would be better just getting rid of the undergravel all together, and buying some Koralia or Tunze powerheads.

check on this thread for ideas on power heads and flow.

The flow in your tank should be 20-40 times your tank volume in gph.
the pumps you have will not be delivering that kind of flow

Thanks capn, great informational thread. Here is the issue and question at hand. I currently do not have ANY powerheads in my tank (I know, I should be scolded) and only have the two powerheads that came with the undergravels (which I never used). I want to know if water will flow through the air inlet on the pump and get pushed out the "out" to create at least a little bit of flow? I would like to have some sort of flow for now until I can upgrade my powerheads.

side note: This is a FOWLER tank for now, and probably wont be any sort of reef tank for a long while since it is my first SW tank.

Thanks reefers!
