I don't know if there is a thread asking this or not. If there is I am sorry I must have missed it while searching the forums. I am looking for any and all information on diving and certification. I am looking to get into diving to further my saltwater hobby but also I plan to spend the rest of my life as an oceanographer. I will be attending school for oceanography in the near future and would like to get a head start on some of the parts that I can accomplish early.

Thank you in advance.

I don't know about you but I got my certification through my university, IU. I'm actually a certified rescue diver through PADI, and did both courses for school credit. It was completely worth it! I think the scariest part of the rescue diver course is doing your first night dive.

You should see if your school offers a scuba course or two. I had to spend an extra weekend outside of school to take my diving certification test separately.

Jordie,

There are a lot of water filled quarries in PA that get dived. Dutch Springs is probably the best known, at least by those of us from elsewhere ;) I'd start by pulling out the local phone book and looking up Dive Shops. Than plan on making the rounds and visiting several that are close enough. Go talk to them, get a feel for the shop and the instructors. It's important that the place makes you feel comfortable. The major certification agencies recognized are PADI, NAUI, and SSI.
