So I set up my 12 gallon aquapod and everything is running smooth. I already have a tiny colony of zoas and they seem to be very happy.

I am a complete newbie to new zoas and can use some help.

I purchased some new zoas from elitereefs.com and have heard all sorts of people dipping them in fresh water, or in lugols iodine. Well, I don't have any lugols so I am curious to know if I should be dipping them in fresh water itself???

Any specifics appreciated.
Should I dip???

I would do the complete dip with every new colony you get.
Why would you take a chance? It only takes an extra 5 minutes.
Get some Lugols Iodine and keep it for just that purpose.

I agree with mfinn and msman
I dont always dip, but I have a QT
If I didnt have one then I would dip like mfinn said. Good luck!

they are just frags, they should be healthy from him. put them in and keep a eye on them for pest. You should be able to see any bugs are eggs BEFORE. Another great guy to do biz with, He's not going to sell you something he has not found I DONT THINK Great guy. I have frags from him myself

Doesn't matter if the guy is the greatest guy in the world.
I would never tell someone to skip a dip or using a q-tank.
Nudi's and their eggs can be on a single polyp.

Telling someone to not dip is bad advice.

The question is, is it ok to dip without the lugols??
My lfs sells it for $20 or $25. I know it is cheaper online but by the time I ship it I'd rather just have it in my hands asap for the arrival of the zoas.

Can I get away with just freshwater dipping without the lugols?

I'd hate to say go ahead and then have you come back and say the frags didn't make it because the got somesort of fungus or bacteria on them.
The lugols is a important part of the dip procedure.

The freshwater will help, no doubt.

I also use FWE in my dips.
Is there anybody in your local area you could borrow some from?
Local club?

It's just so easy to do the dip, with the properly prepared water.

You could also double o triple the amount of iodine and do a SW dip blasting the polyps with a turkey baster or small power head. Most of the nudis wont be able to handle the overdose of iodine and release from the polyps. This seems to be less stressfull on newly shipped frags. You will still have to search for eggs and that is the hard part! They dont always lay the eggs on the polyps-I have seen them on black eggcrate at a buddys house. The best way is to have a QT tank. JMHO

Go pay the $25 for the Lugols it will be worth it in the long run-I bet you spent more than $25 on the frags!!

FWE will work on some but not all types of zoa nudis. IMHE

Best of luck!

I would...i got some zoas yesterday and decided to use TMPCC on them...tropic marin pro coral cure....basically an iodine preparation....they are open today already and look wonderful...so i cant name any negatives to doing so...and the possible positives are numerous...

dip away

You guys have all talked me into it. My LFS has the Lugols so i'm gonna go scoop a bottle of it.

Thanks for all of the info

I inspect EVERY new frag wih a magnifying glass for eggs and fresh water swish for at least 5 minutes. Never hurt a Zoa colony yet and never a flat worm or Nudi.
