Newbie to Green Star Polyp

I was buying some more sea salt at my LFS and met someone who gave me a free frag. I believe it is a Green Star Polyp.

This is my first time adding a coral to my tank. The person told me to place it by moderate water flow and start off by placing it towards the bottom of the tank and slowly moving it towards the top. However I forgot to ask during what time period. Do I move it every couple of days or weeks?

Also, as you can see, they have the frag on top of some rockish type material. Do I keep it on there?

that thing will do good wherever you put it...ld leave it on that rock...it will begin to spread

So I don't have to slowly let it adjust to my lighting? My goal is to eventally get it on my tallest rock in which it will be directly exposed to my lighting.

And do you know if I correctly ID the star polyp type?

Yes, those are green star polyps. Can you tell us your current lighting setup - pc, t5, halide, etc..? GSP is really easy to keep and adapts well to most any lighting scheme. Beware though, in the right conditions it will spread like wildfire. ;)

Sure, I have a 96W PC over a 10G. Is it a good sign that they are getting greener? When I first got them they were looking a bit drab and brownish. Now the green is starting to spread. I still have them placed on the bottom of my tank with some water flow.

You are fine on lighting. Yes it's a very good sign they are coloring up, green is their color. :) Usually brown means they were in low light. Sounds like they are getting happy where you have them. :)

Thats great. Thanks for all your help. I really like the green that is spreading so I am glad its a good sign. Do you think it would be a good idea to place on the colony on an isolated rock? I can keep it seperate from the other rocks so they don't spread too much but at the same time have a nice patch for display. Not sure if that prevents spreading though.

Most keep them on an isolated rock because they can grow really fast and take other corals over. I have some on my main rock structure that I'm happy with, but I keep up on fragging when it's ready. I'd leave them where they are for now and see how it goes. Good luck! :)

I had won a GSP at a local fish meet in January of last year. For about 6 months I had it at the bottom of my tank (55 gal w/ PCs), about last july I moved it higher on the rock work. Since then it has grown like a WEED. I just cut 4 good sized frags off of it. In addtion it has covered about 30% of the rock that it is on.

GSP is a really neat coral, but depending on how you want it to grow, should dictate the placement in your tank.

FWIW When I had the GSP on the bottom of my tank, growth was moderatly slow, but manageable and would have yielded 1-2 frags every six months. I will now be donating frags to the local fish club and selling at my LFS for credit.

I guess what I'm trying to say in my ramblings, is give some good though on where you will place it in your tank!

yeah i agree with Fro, be careful where u put it cause this cool coral can turn into a burden real quick if not kept in check!
