Newbie trying to cycle tank

Hi, I am trying to cycle my 125 gallon tank with base rock. I put in one jumbo shrimp two weeks ago and have not seen a increase in amonia. How long does it take? Is one shrimp enough?

It takes time. Its working but at a slow pace. It took me about 6-7 weeks to cycle my 29gl and I did the same with a piece of raw market shrimp.

You can get it done quicket with adding pure ammonia (non scented). Do a quick search, youll find some info with more tips.

I went with the pure ammonia method so not 100% sure. 1 shrimp in that size tank may not be enough. You have had zero ammonia the entire time? Have you tested nitrates or nitrites?

Test on first week with shirmp? What test kit are you using? Cycling takes time & patience. Purchase ammonia(ace hardware) just above mentioned. Set up a qt for your first fish:beer:

Also if you have friends with mature tank, you could use the water. If you trust your lfs you could also use there water. Just a suggestion

Water will not do nothing. The water does not contain the needed bacteria. The bacteria in on surfaces like the sand and the rocks. If you have a friend you can get some live rock or couple cups of sand to jump start it.

x2 on above and x3,4,5,6 on ACE hardware ammonia. Youll run around like a goose with no head looking for pure ammonia, just get it from ACE.

How much ammonia do I add for a 125?. I was looking at ammonia at the grocery store but it had some other chemical in it. I will check the ace by me.

Too much C&$& you add. Forget about adding ammonia and shrimp.
Water add some live rock and walk away.
Keep up your with your evaporation.
On or around May 13 your tank will have cycled and you will need a CUC .
I never tested the algae bloom answers your question if you cycled.
Enjoy the hobby.

Get it from ACE. It's 10%.

To get my 33 gallons of water up to 2ppm took 1.25ml of 10% ammonia.

I suspect you have 100 gallons of water, so 3.75 to 4 ml of ACE 10% ammonia will do it for you.

Big question is do you have nitrates? If so, you have been converting ammonia to nitrite and nitrite to nitrate, so you are cycling.

Screw the shrimp approach.. use ammonia, dose up to 2ppm, then watch and you know quantitatively exactly what is going on.

Theres some products that add ammonia and nitrifying bacteria into the tank that boost the cycling process i would use especially since your tank is so big compared to what nano reefers do by adding a shrimp or two.

You can add liverock but you risk adding some unwanted things to the tank. I think this is the main reason most cycle from scratch.

Ive learned this is a patient hobby, wait and wait a little more :)

No,two weeks shrimp still has not rotted away. The shrimp still looks about the same since I put it in.

I am surprised that you have not seen the shrimp decaying yet. It has been a long time since I used the shrimp method. I have used ammonia with calculator , it is generally pretty close.

Yes. I have never done it but I did read up on it. I read 2ppm over and over. Leave it for a few days and test it.

Once you feel the tank is cycled, test it out by adding ammonia to 2ppm again. It should drop back to zero by the next day. Then its time to start adding :)

Do a search on Fishless cycle, ammonia cycle or how to cycle with ammonia. One of those should get you great info.

I dosed to 2ppm 3 times. By the third time, ammonia was gone in 12 hours, nitrites in 24. I started with live rock, and added some bacteria as well.

Added two clowns, an emerald crab and 3 other snails... no ammonia has shown up for 4 days. So I think I am cycled well enough for this load.
