Newbies first tank drilling

Should have said " as well" instead of myself on that one. Though I'm not sure what the valve on the non syphon drain is for. Still looks good

Works like a charm, and pin-drop silent.

Looks great!

I just drilled my first tank a few weeks ago as well (for a mixed reef I'm setting up at my parent's house), so I completely understand the initial apprehension... ;)

I have to drill my tank when it arrives, I am absolutely terrified. tempted to by a cheap tank from petsmart just to practice drilling.

Great job on yours!

I'm drilling my 40b this week. Actually going to practice on a 75 gallon sump I have laying around that is drilled on 1 end already haha

I drilled a Biocube 29 with no problem. Just use a clutch drill at its lowest setting. It took me 3 min 26 sec to get through to install a glass holes overflow.

BTW, that is not a Check Valve....I used it as a union with the ball removed. I ran into a problem and made a stupid mistake with the union i had so i just used this. Works fine.

I used a big raw shrimp from the grocery store. I added a bottle of Bio Spira. Ammonia already spiked and dropped, Nitrite spiked a couple days ago. I'm leaving display lights off, and fuge light on at night. I have Chaeto growing in fuge. I haven't hooked up any reactors or anything else except powerhead pumps.

Not sure, it's been 20 years since I cycled a tank. Back then I used some bacteria additive and damsels. I don't have any way of knowing if the Bio Spira helped since water and tank size are so different. It couldn't hurt, I know that- but live sand also contains bacteria so I have no idea.

solid work and thinking about doing this myself.

on your overflow. what stops fish from getting sucked over the rim and into your drain lines. or even jumping over the glass and getting sucked into the sump?

I made an acrylic rim around the open edges of top which should stop most jumpers.

And I have a strainer on all the open pipes, which would stop most things from going down to sump. (not a persistent eel, but nothing would stop a persistent eel anyway.)
