Over the years I have been keeping reefs there have been a few times when a small change has led to a massive difference...fortunately for the better.

Several years ago I decided to start supplementing my 220g tank with a DIY three part solution to add Calcium, Alkalinity and Magnesium. The results, to my eyes at least was amazing. The color and size of the corals improved dramatically. Inside a few weeks the differences were really noticable.

Things have improved over the years, the recipes have been refined and there are now onlinbe calculators to better assess the needs of your tank.

WHat I hope to do is start with the basics, the needs for these three essential supplements. Following that a brief discussion of how to test for these parameters and how to use one of the online reef calculators to figure what your tank needs to bring it back into line with recommended parameters.

Then the good stuff...how to save yourself a ton of cash by making your own.

Briefly I will show you what is required to make the three parts, how to dose them and the best sources of each chemical component.

Now days I use a calcium reactor to keep my alk/cal in balance but still supplement for all of these components when required.

I will also make bags up of each component so that all COMAS members will leave with three preweighed bags of Alk, Cal and Mag. Each will make a gallon of solution when dissolved.

Bring water samples with you and we will run tests for Alk, Cal and Mag. Then, given your tank size, we can tell you what you need to add to bring your parameters into the correct range.

In addition we will hold the elections for the next year, as Stephanie has already posted.

Feel free to ask questions,

Regards,

Paul.

BTW,

who plans on coming so I can figure how many bags of supplements I need to make up.

I will be there again. I found the last meeting extremely informative and can't wait for the next one. :spin3:

Paul,

As long as I am not back in Arkansas I will be there.....

I am back there again this week. Sorry I haven't got with you on the rock....

Will call when I return.

+1, i'll be there.

also Paul, is there any way you can bring a phosphate test kit? just kinda interested to see where they're at.

Hi All,

The meeting will be at the UCO venue, the meeting will begin at 7.30pm.

Membership for 2011 will be collected at this and the December meeting.

Paul.

diy 2 part is the way to go. I use the alk recipe on my reef and it's awesome. I use little of the other 2, so it's easier to just buy retail there, but DIY alk saves me a good bit on my tank. This is good info for those of you that don't do this already!

have fun up there.

I'm going to try and make this one. We just switched the Casady tank over to 2 part and I was thinking of going back to it myself.
