Niger Trigger

There is about a 5 inch Niger Trigger at the lfs and I was thinking about keeping him in my 180 fowlr. Is $60 a good price for him. He has no ich spots, is nice and plump, and active. How is there general aggression???

The current inhabitants are:

4 inch Yellow Tang
4 inch Hippo Tang
3 inch Hawkfish
6 inch Sailfin Tang
3 inch Bursa Trigger
7 inch Vlamangii tang... Dont worry I am planning for a much larger tank

There is also a same size Huma Trigger for the same price and condition. Could I add him instead of the Niger Trigger. Or would he be incompatable with my Bursa?

And there is a nice 4 inch Porcupine Puffer there too. Would he be compatible with my current inhabitants??

I would QT for at least 6 weeks before adding to the DT if I decide to choose one.

Sorry for all the questions but I want to make sure I wont regret my decision.

Forgot to add that the Huma, and Niger trigger have been there for a month. But the Porcupine has only been there for 2 weeks.

I dont see any real issues with adding the Niger appropriately, just watch the Bursa.

Bursa and Picassos are too similar IMO and I would expect one heckuva duel if you added the Picasso.

IMO/IME Puffers need very large tanks with more aggressive tankmates and they're a mess! Honestly, I'm a puffer "hater" so I wont make any further comments other than they're really awesome fish (my #1 favorite to dive with), but not in my tanks!

Oh yeah and $60 seems reasonable......usually they run $40-60 (retail) around me for a 3-4" fish.

I agree with above, Huma and Bursa might be iffy (I would like Huma in first as Bursa are typically more aggressive), Niger and Bursa should be fine....Long term, I might fear for the life of your Hawkfish....Triggers tend to pick on slow moving fish.

Puffer should be fine too compatibilitywise...Hope you have a quality skimmer. If the Triggers don't torture the Hawk, the Puffer might

Thanks for the great advice! The Bursa is very docile, of course he is still a juvenile though. So maybe I would be better off with the Niger Trigger. Is there anything special I should know about the species and how well they do with smaller fish???

I am on my second Niger, my first I had for allmost 5 years. They are great fish with loads of personality and they get prettier with age. Only problem is they also get nastier with age. Juviniles are pretty good community fish, when they become adults they get more aggressive. Your Tangs can always handle themselves quite well against aggressors. I would just worry about any smaller or less active fish.

Thanks, I was thinking about moving the Hawkfish to my 30 gallon reef. Do you think he would be ok in there he would be the only fish. Or maybe I could put him in my 40 gallon refugium.

Now with your experience with the Niger Trigger what other inhabitants were in with him? And what size was the tank and how much open swimming space was there?

I was planning on making two pillars of live rock in the middle of my tank to create maximum swimming space. Or should I do it differently?

With Tangs and Wrasses I really like the idea of a lot of open swimming space, I have 3 "pillars" in my 240 for that reason.

My current Niger is in a 240, he is just a baby still at just over 2 inchs....My first was in a 125, he was great for about 2 years with everybody then he got sick of my monster Maroon Clown chasing him and turned the tables. I had to remove the Moroon or I'm certain the Niger would have killed him. I put the 5 inch Clown in my smaller tank (Maroons being slow movers).

Other than that I would say Nigers are more antagonistic (for lack of better description) than flat out aggressive, they keep their tankmates on their toes. My Niger used nip my Porky Puffers tail, and by the time the Puffer turned around he was gone:lol:

I ended up going to a different LFS just to look around today and found a great bargain. I got a 3 inch Niger Trigger for only 17 bucks!! The tank he was in was pretty cool. There was probably close to 15 Niger Trigs in it all swimming together like a school.

Put him in QT and is already eating some of the flakes! But thats pretty common with triggers.

This store had a lot of realy good prices. I was very tempted but I knew I would regret it. They had huge Picasso triggers for only 20 bucks! And 6inch Raccon B/F for only 22 bucks. There were 2 beautiful 7 inch clown triggers for only 69 bucks!! I still cant get over how cheap thease two healthy clowns were. I will definetly be shopping there again
