Nightmare Red Cotton Algae: Took over my tank

interesting, never realized how much of a problem this can be. i have it in my fuge, and it has haulted the growth of the green macroalgae by shading it from the light. however, in my 180 display i don't have any of it. i've got 3 tangs, a sailfin, kole, and regal, as well as turbo snails (although, not sure if they are mexican or not). i am having high nitrate issues and was looking into making a bigger fuge. maybe i'll try clearing all cotton candy from my existing fuge first, then add a snail or two.

Be extremely careful. I would take it offline, clean it up, and pray it doesn't decide to go in the tank. Fish won't touch it IME. It took me literally years to get it out of my system, and the last straw was removing my fuge completely.

i hand picked as much of the cotton candy as i could last night. i also picked back the green stuff, so it could start to grow back again. i put the sponge filter back in so i could limit the debris from the cotton candy from getting into the DT.

i'll regularly clear out the cotton candy and get a turbo in the fuge when i get a chance.

Wow great thread! I have this stuff as well, never knew what it was. I actually thought it looked nice as it is purple in my tank *LOL* Just stays short and does not bother anything really. I may try an urchin or some mexican turbos and see how they munch it.

You can see it in this pic..

are there different types of turbos? I got some turbos to try and fight this algae but haven't seen them really eating much of it if any.
