Everything I have heard is that they can be VERY tough to get accustomed to your tank. If they are WC keep everything nice and quiet around the tank for the first few weeks and be sure to give them a good QT and watch for Brook.
They are beautiful fish and from everything I've heard are great in the tank once they've become accustomed to their new home. At least one person here on RC is raising some nigripes fry so it is possible.

They are! I ordered 3 Juvi's in from my LFS and only 1 survived the shipment. The lone survivor is doing great in my QT frag tank. The wholesaler listed 9 on inventory. My LFS ordered a pair 2 weeks ago but they did not make it through his quarantine.
Cafetao: I think these come from Maldives in the Indian Ocean so they were not affected. They have just been hard to come by because they are poor shippers and not too many people want to pay for dead fish IMO.
I have some experience with the fish as I had a pair previously that died in a power outage a while back. I guess what I'm asking is are they now becoming commonly available, in other words, has the damage in the Maldives been repaired enough for fish to be exported regularly.
My LFS has four more that at this time appear to be adjusting very well. In my personal experience the adjustment problems are over blown.

The wholesaler that I receive a stock list from gets 5 or 6 in about once a month. I didn't notice any slow down after the tsunami. The two main reasons that you don't see a lot of nigripes is that they don't ship well (as said above) and there is only a small market for them.
My two had been in the wholesalers tank for over a week. It was good for me because I knew they were healthy. It was bad for the wholesaler because the ones that I didn't take were still there the next week as well. They can get more than 5-6 a month, but when they balance the mortality and interest factors, that's about all they want.
