I am looking for a Nikkor lense and I am thinking about the Nikon AF-S VR 70-300mm. How do you know if you are buying for a reputable site? The prices range a lot. Any pros or cons to this lense? What is the best deals at a reputable site that anyone out here on RC have bought from? Any advice is welcome.

Thanks!!!

Nikon 70-300 is a good lens. if your going o use it for distances shooting.

I would go with 18-200. It alot more versitile. It could tank close up and far range.

I have the 70-300 and 105. I'm shopping around for the 18-200mm VR.

Good luck with your choice, either way nikon is good camera.

I always recommend B&H as a reliable source of photo gear: http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/449088-USA/Nikon_2161_70_300mm_f_4_5_6G_AF_S_VR.html

As for the 70-300, I have not used it but seen many results with it. The performance from 70-200mm is supposedly top notch, but it can get a bit soft after that if not stopped up a bit (200-300mm). Here's a good review : http://www.bythom.com/70300VRlens.htm .

As for the 18-200, I've seen very mixed opinions on the image quality of the lens. I'd go with the 18-70mm f/3.5-4.5 (I upgraded from the 18-55 kit lens to this and love it) and the 70-300mm VR instead...

Why would you not go with the 300 instead of the 200? Is it just a case of having to be TOO far away from the object your are shooting thus making it not very practical for everyday use? Also, what does the VR stand for? Sorry for the questions...I have a good camera but not very much knowledge on the subject....Thanks!
