The wife gave the ok for me to get a new lens (so happy). First i have a nikon d60 and i can't make my mind up on which one to get. Do anyone have any experience with both these lens?

iceemn360 those are some nice photos you got with using the sigma 105. Did you use a tripod for those shots or just all hand held? The sigma is half the price of the nikon one but the nikon 105 have VR. Is it really that much more better? I'v been reading alot of forms and everyone is saying that if you got the $$$ you are better off getting the nikon. Very hard decision.....

I'm certainly no expert, so take my opinions with a grain of salt, but that being said...

I rented the Nikon 105 VR, and it was amazing. I am currently saving up to buy it down the road. I think it is totally worth the extra money, if you have it.

I have the Sigma and I use it on my D80 with excellent results. If you are going to be using it for macro shots of your corals you will need to use a tripod but that is going to be the case no matter what lens you get.

i just started to take pictures and i first purchased a 50mm macro lens by sigma. it did not do the job! so i sold that and purchased the 105 macro lens by sigma approximately $400. the autofocus drive on the lens is a bit loud but u dont really need to use af for macro shots. the lens trails for a while until it gets in focus so that is another problem with the sigma. but like most people say and i will say, you dont really need af for macro shots.

here's some pics i took on my recent vacation...

How do well the sigma works if not doing any macro shots. Like walking around town and taking snaps on w/e?

Both lenses are sharp. Both lenses work fine for shots other than macro work. What you need to realize, however, is that neither is a zoom lens.

The only real drawback to the Sigma is that it's "external focusing." That means that the lens barrel extends while focusing. Normally that's not an issue but when you're up against the front of your tank it can be a hassle.

You might also want to look at the non-VR version of the Nikon. VR is of very little use for macro work and you can save a ton of money.

Not new, as far as I know, but B&H, KEH and Adorama all sell used gear and have a return policy if something isn't what you expected; an improvement over eBay.

Ive got the Nikon 105 VR and love it.

Ive found the VR to be very nice when shooting top downs.

It is VERY heavy though compared to the sigma.

The internal focusing is very important to me though, as i would hate to scratch my tank with the filter threads if i wasnt paying attention with the sigma.

Just something to think about.

Isn't there another nice 3rd party macro, maybe Tamron? Beerguy probably knows... I've only ever used the Canon 100mm macro.

Yeah. It's a sharp lens as well but, like the Sigma, isn't internal focusing so it has the same issue.

Thanks to everyone from there respond. I think i know what i am getting now its going to be the nikon 105vr due to that it have the internal focusing. Getting into the camera thing is costly lol

VR is overrated, I hardly notice it working when I take macroshots with my hand.

Macroshots are meant to be stationary on a tripod, don't be crazy like me and take macroshots freehand assumming VR compensation will work, it does. But not that effective.

I use the 105mm Nikkor VR Macro lense. I think the lense is about the same size as your D60. Even bigger with the lense cover on.

i was planning on using the lens for more then just macro i guess. Like taking some pics of family and friends photo and views of the bay area.
