Got a new D 5000 and I find I cannot open raw in CS3 with this camera. My D 40 worked fine but I now find out there is a plug in which i downloaded and installed according to directions on adobe site but still get message "cannot open because its not the right kind of document"Any help would be greatly appreciated.I fear I will need a newer version of PS(hope not) TIA

There is a known compatibility issues with CS3 and D5000 because the older ACR does not recognize the NEFs from this new body. You have 3 choices:

1. Use Adobe's DNG converter to convert your NEF -> DNG (digital negative) You can then open this in CS3.

2. Use Nikon ViewNX, which is good and free, export as TIFF or JPG to CS3

3. How about this.... try going through Adobe Bridge, browse and open the NEFs, see if it will open. I don't have a D5000 so I can't try this but my D700 NEFs open up fine. From there you should be able to edit the image in CS3 (usually as TIFF).

You need to update your Camera RAW plugin. The problem is that I don't believe that you can get CS3 updated for that camera.

The workaround is to download Adobe's DNG convertor. Convert your NEF files to digital negative format (DNG) and your existing copy of CS3 will open them.

Thanks for the replies.I downloaded the DNG converter yesterday but I am not sure how to install it.I use mozilla browser and it is in the download file but when I click on it PS opens. It is beyond my computer knowledge on how to get this converter to operate. Is it suppose to automatically convert when i try to open the new raw image in PS or do you need to convert them with the DNG and then find them and open them.sorry ,I am not a computer geek by any means.thanks for the help

Thanks Doug,When I get home I will try to convert and then open on PS.I believe that is what I didnt get last night after 4 hours of staring at the monitor I was a bit punchy.I appreciate it

OT: How do you like the D5000? I've pretty much decided I want one, but I like hearing first hand opinions.

Wish I could tell you.I really like it on paper but not being able to play with a raw from it I am not sure yet.Hopefully I can tell more tonight.I have a D 40 also and just screwing around with the D 5000, no tri pod my initial impression is good and I feel comfortable shooting with it so thats a plus.

From what I've read, it's basically a D90 with the DX sensor. I enjoyed using my friend's D90 and my other friend's D40 in the real world, so I hope it's a good compromise of both.

Thanks. That did it.Now I can convert to DNG and open on CS 3
Here are 2 I just quickly did.I am no photographer but I am learning.Thank You,problem solved
