Just got the D-80 (upgraded from a D-50 that got hit by lightening) with the 35-70mm lens. My question, is anyone else shooting with it? and what lenses do you use?

Thank you.

Concerning your question ask yourself, "is anyone shooting with a D50? what lenses do you use?" because your going to get the same answers. The D80 has a SLIGHTLY bigger sensor but if you actually notice a lens behaving different from one camera to the other your a better man than I. Your old camera and your new camera = same difference.

Now much more importantly...how did your D50 get hit by lightning?!

the lens fits right on the body, i was wondering if there were certain macro lenses people were using.

as far as the lightening goes...lol, it really sucks. I was downloading pictures off of it. My desk is in front of a really nice picture window. I had about 1200 pictures on the card and it takes roughly 5minutes for 100 pictures (4gb card). I walked away to watch the weather, because a violent storm was pushing through our way. Not realizing how close it was, i went and made a quick sandwich. Came back to my room and say the wind picking up and rain just started to come down in sheets. Not thing of the computer because it is on a surge protector, i ran around the house shutting windows. Well, my house got hit on the gutter outside the window where my computer was. The magnetic charge erased my hard drive, destroyed all of my back-up cds, destroyed the camera's internal memory, burnt the SD card in it, and melted the copper gutter....after fighting with renters insurance, i got my check to replace everything a month ago. the storm hit over 2 years ago...gota love speedy service from --------. in the mean time, i got another computer, multiple external hard drives (to back up all of my information and are kept in 3 different places), a new camera, and some other stuff. I also moved out of that house because of school being done and work back in CT, where i am currently in more school....

My son has a D80 which I have been using. I am looking at getting either a D80 or D90 for myself. I've never used a D50 but the D80 has some very nice features, including a higher resolution. I will probably get the 18-105mm VR lens as my main lens and will then consider getting a macro lens, (most likely the Sigma 105mm or, perhaps the Sigma 150 which has been given rave comments). Other lenses of interest to me would be the Nikkor 70-300mm VR zoom and the Sigma 10-20mm ultra-wide angle.

In terms of macros, there are at least four excellent choices in the 100mm length (which is a great length). They all have excellent optical properties and are well recommended:

Tamron 90mm
Tokina 100mm
Sigma 105mm
NIkkor 105mmVR

The first three cost around $400US while the later is a lot more (about $800).

You also get shorter (60 or 85mm) or longer (150/180/200mm) macro lenses. The longer ones are particularly useful if you are taking photos of insects which might get spooked or sting you.
