nikon users help

The first thing to do is to read the manual with your camera in hand. Take the time to play with each setting as you read about it, photographing anything in the room. Once you do that you'll understand your cam's strengths and weaknesses and you'll be better prepared to ask questions.

The mode I use depends on the situation I'm shooting for. I use P a lot when I'm taking pics outside of the kids. For the tank I'm on a tripod using mostly Manual mode with manual focus.

i have been playing arround but 17-70mm lens is there a better lens for taking pics of tank other than what i have read 105mm at 800 buck

The Nikon and Sigma 105s are the best lenses for the job, IMO. You could give the 60mm Nikon a try, I believe you can pick it up used.

You could try extension tubes, closeup filters, and a few other options for the lens, but in the end you'll want a nice macro lens.

I use Nikon lenses but in the past have used Sigma and found some really great copies from them. The nikor 105 is a great lense and you can pick up an older manual lense for a lot less. I use the older 105, the 35-70 with macro feature which is great and the 70-200 2.8 with great results with extension tubes. There realluy are many different ways to capture the images.

1st I would suggest really understanding the camera you are using then determine what you want to capture and it really depends on your tank and the amount of space you have to work with on which lense setup you use.
The nice thing with digital is you can play all day shooting and looking till you get the desired results. Experiment with different setting till you get comfortable.
Also make sure you use a good tripod it really helps with subjects that do not move.
