Nikon's D90 HD Video Quality?

Its not that useful, manual focus is not fun. Also whitebalance shifts a lot when you are moving around and focusing on new subjects. Taking tank videos it does a pretty good job if you have it mounted on a tripod and you never move it. You can do some nice videos where the subject is out of focus and then slowly comes into focus, like racing. If AF worked then it would be just about as good as most consumer level HD camera's. I am no way shape or form a pro. Check out some of the video's on youtube, that will give a good idea.

I'm not a D90 owner but I've used the body before. If you pan quickly, there is a jello effect, which is inherent with CMOS sensors. Also on certain angles when pointing towards a light source you will see a 'stair stepping' effect kind of like what you would see when videotaping a computer monitor. There is also a 5-minute limit on videos.. but perhaps the biggest issue is the lack of autofocus in video mode.

Xtm's "stair stepping" effect is really apparent in the sand on that video. Of course you can see it on the LR, black of the glass, and the flower pot to.

Not the best at video. I was just trying it out. I know I wont use it for "keeper" videos. I have a camcorder for that. Heck my P&S records better vidoe then my D90.

Thanks for the info. I was hoping to just capture short clips of my 2 year old daughter with it when I don't have my video camera with me since I don't always lug that thing around. I will head out to the store to play with the video function a bit before I decide on the purchase.

Here is a video I shot with my D90: Diodogorgia Feeding Video. The quality is excellent and obviously, the ability to fit quality lenses on the camera is a huge bonus. However, as stated above, the lack of auto focus can be a problem if you plan to shoot a lot of fast moving objects that can move in and out of focus range or require you to pan quickly. For example, I was having a heck of a time shooting my mate's RC helicopter but shooting close up videos of corals is not a problem.

If you plan to shoot short clips of your 2 year old daughter and edit them together, I don't suspect you will run into a lot of the problems associated with the D90's movie feature. If used properly, it can be a very good artistic tool. However, don't expect it to be a camcorder.
