i have heard that sugar or vadka can lower nitrate levels.does anyone know anything about if this work, and if so how much of one or the other per gallon\gallons and how often.

I used 1 sts of sugar for my 90g once daily and nitrate came down to 0 within a week.

Well, I stopped dosing when my nitrate was down to zero. From there I watch my feeding habbit and water change regularly, I am lucky enough to keep my nitrate <5 ppm for the last 6 months.

I would read up on the various threads located in Randy Holmes-Farley's Chemistry Forum here on Reef Central. The addition of simple sugars can be very touchy. If done incorrectly, you could lose an entire tank worth of livestock. Not that it isn't effective, but it's just risky. FWIW, I did do some experimental dosing and found that if done properly, theoretically it should work wonders. Of course, with my crazy dosing, I did experience minor casualties and stress on few corals, but it did help slightly. This subject definitely needs deep research before you attempt to try it.
