Hello all. I have revampled my 155 that was running over ten years old. About 2 months ago, the nitrates had climbed to over 300 from protein skimmer not running and lack of water changes. There was only one fish at the time that survived it (clown fish)
I have done about 6 water changes, of 80 percent of more to help lower them to 40. I have also replaced substrate, 10 year old crushed coral for sand. I dry vacced (sp) the sump to remove any detritus. I have the protein skimmer humming again.
Question is, after all these water changes, change to sand, complete cleaning of detritus in tank and in sump, my nitrates still fluctuate between 40 and 80. Any ideas how I can lower this to 20 or below?
155 bow front, sand bottom, 50 lbs of live rock, sump with bio balls (can not be removed, sump was built with them in it with no way access to balls) Over size protein skimmer, and two pumps out of sump at 500 gal an hour.
Thanks
