During the cycle, test for both to see how far along you have gotten. After the tank has cycled most people stop testing for nitrite and focus on nitrate. Any nitrite in a reef tank is bad news.
I generally don't recommend bothering to test for nitrite. it is never elevated in an established tank, and is not toxic anyway (unlike fresh water systems).
