Nitrate question?

breutus

Don't ask me, I'm wrong.
okay the new tank has not been set up long so I might just be overreacting. But I thought going to this set up I was going to reduce my nitrate issue alot more than I have.

I wonder if these could be my issue still

I had a lot of this type of media in my old filter, and to help seed the new tank I put a bunch of this old media in the first spot in my sump where the water comes in, thinking it would be beneficial. Is it supplying the nitrate problem. Are they just nitrate factories on each one?

I only have a big handful of cheato in the sump. There is plenty of room for more, do I need more? If my lighting is on the lower side in my sump will that cause part of the problem.

I have a 72g BF with a 30g sump, about ten pounds of live rock rubble in the sump along with about 5 and a half inches of live sand and the cheato. In the main tank is about 80 to a 100 pounds of live rock, and a three inch live sand bed. I get a pretty decent skim on my skimmer.

But I am still at about 20 PPM on nitrates!!!

Sorry for the long post but I was sure somebody here would be able to give me some advice!

Yeah, those won't help. That's for sure.

Give it time. All I have for nitrate control is -

Water changes
Chaeto

Don't worry. Do your simple things (water changes, less feeding, lighting, etc...) but in my opinion simply sounds like some NTS and just trying to figure out the new setup. 20 ppm isn't that bad so just fine tune from there. Skimmer settings, etc... You've only had it up a couple weeks

just a thought.. I think if your Cheato is growing, it must be feeding on the nitrates, and of course growing because of light.

Is it growing?

tetra9999- well I haven't really noticed any growth on the cheato but at the same time it has only been like 4 weeks. on the other hand though there was a very small bit of calurpa (sp?) in the bunch of cheato I had gotten and it has grown like a weed!

And my biggest question is should I be taking that media from the Ehiem out of there, or should I leave it in. i know it was always recommended to take bio balls out of a system, i didn't know if the same applies to these?

You have LR too, I saw it :) and a sand bed. Shallow as it may be it will still contain anerobic areas.

bruetus - your fine, its takes time for the nitrate-loving anerobic bacteria to take hold

if your interested in a sulphur denitrifier look into the link.

I wish I would have bought mine when I set up the tank first. I bought a Midwest Aquatic XL model, my trates were 20 and now they are 0. It took about 5weeks for the thing to break in but once it did the params are 0/0/0

color is starting to come back to the SPS and the hair algea is getting better.
