So which is correct?
Well that's the easiest question to answer! The reefer that's happy with their tank is doing it the "right" way
I just checked my nitrates, 2.5ppm. I am sooo glad to be done with my little reaquascaping fiasco. I gained a lot of respect for my biofilter by messing it all up chasing a stubborn blenny. It took a little over a month to get down from 40-50 ppm. I did 2 or 3 water changes of 25% in the first couple weeks, then went back to my usual routine of 10% every week or so. Every couple days I would remember to toss in a cup or so of vinegar (this is not how you are supposed to carbon dose, I'm lazy). I think more than anything it was just letting everything settle back into a groove. If anything I've been even more of a slacker the last couple weeks cause I'm upgrading to a bigger tank so my tank-time is divided.
Once they get high nitrates are def annoying to deal with. If you stick with it you'll find a scheme that suits you and your tank. Good luck!
