nitraterductor

I gravity feed from the display to the sump.Run the flow valve wide open.Feed 4ml vodka per day.Nitrate level <5ppm.Down from 160ppm.

Those things are very expensive. TRy growing macroalgae first. I have used chaeto in the fuge and never had nitrates or phosphates.

waste of money. for less than $10 do a remote sandbed in a bucket. Does the exact same thing but better.

thanks for the info guys i am trying to grow algea at this moment i saw one for sale and was wondering if i should look into buying it. it was to small thou.

Its not a waste of money. The reactor does a great job.I would challenge a bucket of sand doing the same job of this unit.Plus a bucket of sand in ones livingroom can might not please the wife.Im sure alot of equipment we have could be replaced with cheaper inferior options.

1- the amount of nitrifying area that the bucket has it majorly larger
2-why wouldn't you put the bucket in your stand.
3-This is by far not an inferior option it actually is a better option.

I looked into one when I set up my 560g and went with a remote after spending hrs reading up on it.

You looked into one.I have one.Do you Know the product that you are trashing?Do you know the reator has an internal pump for circulation to avoid dead spots and prvent dangerous gas buildup. The unit is well designed and sturdy.
Person who owns one(loves it)

do you have a rdsb? Have you tried your system with both at different times to see which one does more for the $. I never said that it wasn't well made, for the money it better be. I just said that I belive that you have more sand and surface area with the Rdsb and its pennies compared. When you add the cost difference and the larger bed that the RDSB has there is no comparison.

No, I dont have a rsb. That is why I wont say its a waste of money.I have an Aquamedic Nitratereductor that I shared my good experience with someone who asked.

well i just found out that the one i was looking at is to small anyway. ok the bucket thing what do u do just pump the water in and out of a bucket of sand?

I made my own nitrate reactor (sulphur based) out of an old cannister filter (eheim2217) I had laying around.

You can just buy the sulphur media, and do this with any cannister filter FWIW, its easy, and its not a permanent mod (no drilling or glueing). If you simply loop the output of the cannister filter to feed back into the intake, so the cannister recirculates, it will work as a reactor. I used 3/4" CPVC to do this. Be sure to have two 'T's in the recirculating loop.

Then fill the cannister up with sulphur media from marine-depot, or aquatic-eco (2 places I know have it).

The two 'T's serve as the inlet and outlet for the tank water to get to and from the reactor. You can use any number of JG or compression fittings for 1/4" flexible line... whatever you want.

Turn it on, feed the reactor with a pump or something so it gets a good drip-rate, and you are in business! Its a good idea to use an ORP meter on the output for a bit to figure out what the best drip-rate is.

I owned one and could not be more happy. You do not need to feed it all the time if you're using the bactoball (white ones). It's matainance free for me after the first months. I tried all kind of methods (got dsb, large refug with lots of macro algea, feed less food, more water change ect...) to reduce my nitrate and never got it down below 10 and keep it there for long. Now with the reactor my nitrate are zero and sps are color up at it best.
