How long is your tank up? What to you have in it? What are your numbers and what do you have in the tank? I found vodka dosing was effective in lower my nitrates and phosphates out of the water column until the cheato and skimmer could take over.

Water Changes are the fastest way to reduce nitrates. In addition to watching how much you're feeding, most people have a tendency to overfeed, myself included!

While water changes will help, they're more of a band aid than anything else IMO. You want to find out what's causing the nitrates to begin with and remove that first. This could be a dead fish or invertebrate, leftover food, a bunch of poop/detritus or just bad source water. (tap) Nip it in the bud so to say. GL.
