Nitrates

Jeff, I still have that weed... :bum: I mean green stuff...:beachbum: I mean, well you know what I mean!:D *

I got the LifeReef set up over the weekend, now I just need to get all the wires, and tubes, and stuff in their proper places. I have about 3" of sand in the fuge, * 2 clumps of chaeto, and a 6500K 26W desk lamp I found at Menards for $8.99 for a light. I ran into a bunch of problems fitting the sump and plumbing together and eventually redid it all. I also broke on of my return bulkheads loose again and it seeps ever so slightly, I hope it will stop like it did originally, I'm afraid to try to tighten it any more... I had to Dremel the skimmer to get it to fit, it missed by 3/16".

The good news is that since I replaced all the plumbing things fit better. I think my Ca reactor and equipment will all fit in the stand now, if not I'll build one that will and sell the current one, which I may do anyway if anybody is interested...

Nitrates are at 5 and have been for a while, still have a little hair and some bubbles but the coraline has really taken off and I think my colors are looking great... I wonder if a VSV regimen rather than straight vodka would work better?

Well I just checked and I'm below 5, not zero yet but much better than where I started. I think the Smirnoff is doing the trick! I have chaeto in the new 'fuge and maybe that's helping too. Need to do some more water changes and add some kind of carbon filter. In a five gallon bucket my water is still distinctly yellow. Corals are all growing great!

Now my RO quit, guess it's time for filters... I hate hauling water.

Well, I'm a believer. I tested for the first time today since I posted last and the results are great! I did just the basics but nitrates were the big issue anyway.

*Nitrates <5 and I would say by the color, much closer to zero than five, I still think there is a little pink in the color but not much.

*pH 8.0

*dKh 11

*Ca ~350

Ca is pretty low so I doubled my drip and will test again Sunday.

I'm still dosing 2.3 ml of Smirnoff once a day (I remember most days...:D ) and will continue until I'm sure it's zero, then go to half that dose. My chaeto is on idle so I'm not giving it a lot of credit for the reduction, but it may have helped some. I've never exported any... If anybody needs some help with their nitrates I still have the instructions. ~90 days and I went from very high readings (off my color chart) to near zero, pretty good I'd say!
