Nitrite level

Is a nitrite reading of .25 mg/L ok? I know it suppose to be at 0. How can I lower it to 0? Water change? I have fish and some small softies in it and they seem fine.

That's an indicator that your tank is still cycling, they must come down naturally don't do anything until they read zero.

Thats what I thought, but a few weeks ago the nitrite was at 0. What could have caused it to go up?

Hard to say, a few thing that come to my mind is perhaps placing to much bio-load at one time may do the tank to have a mini cycle, what happens is that the bacteria population is still weak and it can't handle the load fast enough.
