Hi everybody. I have been unvited by my employer to set up a large reef system at work but am having some difficulty with finding a location that will allow for a fish room. I'm pretty excited about this build because it is in a residential school with lots of interested young people around. I would love to hear people's experiences with maintaining a 300-500 gallon tank with all the equipment being located under the display. Is this even possible?

Tons of people do not have a fish room and make it work. What kind of tank are you doing? Mixed Reef? FOWLR? SPS?

It's very manageable just much easier if you had a fish room or even a closet to house equipment.

If you are unable to have a fish room or a remote area for your equipment, since you are doing a 300-500g tank you should have at least a 8'x36" foot print. That is fairly large. You can have a 4' sump, and 4' for everything else, chiller, carx, etc.

Check out the large tank builds and you will find plenty that do not have fish rooms.

I just saw episode of tanked today. There are millions of people who have the sump under the dt on that size . Or larger . The kids will love it when it's done . Good luck.

ArmanS, this will be a mixed reef. My hope was that if I could get the filtration and all related equipment at workbench level, it would be much easier to keep students engaged in maintenance. Since I need to keep this a self-contained unit, I'm going to look at elevating the display tank another 12 to 24 inches since this will be in a lobby. It will also give me a little bit more headroom under the display.

Sounds like you will have plenty of room under the tank. Are you going to run a CA Reactor? That is one thing that will probably require around a 2'x2' area under the tank. If you do research, ask questions, and plan, I think you will have no troubles at all.

I ran a 300g for several years with all the equipment in the stand. I've seen a 450 square tank run the same way fine as well. Extra height in the stand will make a huge difference.

If you're trying to put all the equipment at workbench level, then perhaps if the lobby is big enough, you can "build" a fishroom behind the tank and stick it out into the room a bit, like a large armoire.
