My welder guy could not get to my stand this week. Suppose to meet with him Monday with the steel. I bought 1 1/4" 14g square tube for the stand. Told this would be plenty with 8 verticals, still wish I would have bought 11g. Hopefully will be able to get it finished by mid week so I can get it painted or powder coated. We'll see.

I covered one with truck bed coating one time and was very happy with it
the stuff they sell in the blue can at oriellys its pretty scratch resistant and dries very fast even in the cold weather. it even stuck well to the welded areas unlike most paints..

I think powder coating is overrated It chips like every other finish out there and yes they offer a lifetime warranty with their finishes blah blah blah but are you gonna take your tank down to let them re-shoot it?

I powder-coated the frame on a street rod I owned and it chipped and yes they would re-shoot for free but I would have to dismantle the whole vehicle for them to do so...

with paint you can touch it up if need be same thing goes for the truck bed coating stuff.. i think with a good acid etching primer and some truck bed coating you would be very happy

I wouldnt trust my welding skills enough to make a fish stand out of metal
I have welded car frames with success but that was thicker than 14 guage
if you know a guy thats good hes worth the wait!

hope all goes well for yah!

14g is what i used, it seemed fine

It must be cross braced on the sides though, to stop it from resonating

Thanks Matt, I'll check it out. A buddy does bedliners and told me 60 bucks to do it. thought maybe I could do it cheaper by just getting the off the shelf stuff at the auto parts store. Another buddy said he would powder coat for 50 bucks. I dunno, still undecided.

Eddy, I've tried to explain how I want the bottom of the stand, however, he does'nt seem to get it. Same as yours, nut welded on the frame and bolt for adjuster. Could you please post a pic of it so I can show him? Oh, and yes, will have 1/8" strap on all 4 sides, top and bottom. And a 3" piece of strap across where the nut will be welded.

that is the only pic I really have for reference. We used a step drill to drill the hole out to accept the bolt. And I believe I used 3/4 zinc plated bolts from ACE. However, if i did it again, I would have got 1 inch bolts from Fastenal just for surface area. Careful you dont go too big otherwise the "feet" will stick out from the sides of the stand.
