No, I can't ID it.

If you need others to tell you if you were ripped off, you shouldnt have bought something without researching them first.
This has nothing to do with being new or not.. it is because we are helping people with names, and then they turn around and try to make a profit- hurting corals in the process. they buy somethng, usually a WC colony, come here, get a name, and immediatly frag and post FS or on ebay for a profit.
That sickens me.

maybe thats what people are doing by asking you, researching it. I know alot of the people here are very knowledgeable and before I go Google something Im a ask on RC.

Ok, once again your judging everyone. I'm not going to put you or anyone else out of business. I DONT SELL ZOO's. Not everyone does this. I understand what your saying--it does get me mad but I'm not going to run around and say that everyone who wants an ID is selling frags. Thats also wrong.

Let the boycotting begin, umm...after just one more purchase. Sorry, but I have to get those exclusive very rare S.D.W.W.F.W.B. DDB's

I've stopped posting in the zoanthid forum for a while now. I've also stopped buying zoanthids lately. Peoplep are asking ridiculous prices for things that I wouldn't give a buck a polyp.

There are a few sites that have always been a little higher in price. Those sites offer great service, quality, and happiness. A lot of other websites are now charging the higher prices and are not nearly giving the quality of service or product of the first "highly priced" sites.

Let stick together and boycott zoanthid sales for the next month or so...

HAHAHA

Hey cow, how the hell are you?

You know, in the end, who really cares.
It's not like anyone is going to go postal if another ID question is asked.

It just so happens that this is the #1 reef related BB on the internet and gets all kinds of traffic, good, bad and new-bie.

I won't get my panties in a bunch over really too much on here.

I'm much more happy when I'm living my life and watching my reef, then arguing over semantics that matter nothing to anyone in the end.

Really does anyone here expect human behavior to change because of a Bulletin board thread?

Peace.

Partially correct ummm...Look at this:

http://reefcentral.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=904366

...someone will spend money on that, I agree with you. I wouldnt, there's cheaper ones that look better but thats my opinion. Im always lookin for a deal even on the cheap ones.

Yeah, those orange envys are insanely priced and not nearly pretty enough to justify it. That little $35 frag I posted earlier looks 10 times more beautiful to me and I'd definetely buy that instead of orange envy, even if orange envy were the same price.

Seeing all of you bash people for asking ID questions sickens me. It takes a bit of pride swallowing to publicly say "I dont know what this is can you help?" TO get bashed while doing it is pathetic. If you dont want to read the thread, then dont. But please quit bashing and allow this forum to do what i think it is originally made to do: allow others to help people. We were all new once, and NONE of us got to where we are now by ourselves...

As several people have pointed out already, it's not so much that asking for an ID is irritating, it's that this forum is always spammed with those threads. A few of us have suggested there should be an ID forum separate from this. I stopped reading this forum for a few weeks because there was never anything interesting. This thread has been the most interesting one in quite a while.

I don't understand your comment about "all of us being new once". I've only been keeping zoanthids a few months and I've never asked for an ID on a zoanthid. It's not being new that drives you to ask for an ID. I don't know the names of most of my zoanthids, and I'm sure more than one doesn't have a name, like this one:

P.S. Can someone id this? JK :)

what I meant is you should be researching BEFORE you buy, not after.
BTW-- I dont sell Zoanthids, nor am I a business, so I am not worried about you putting me out of business.
What I am worried about is if we say they can be worth $X.XX than people will sell them on ebay or here in the FS forum, for huge markups (waay more than they should be sold for) and keep driving zoanthid polyp prices thru the roof.

Im with you on that part. So, just keep the pricing out of the ID threads???..:D

Researching before you buy would probably not work for WC pieces in the LFS. Everyone is not self confident enough after a recent purchase (especially after an expensive piece), and it be nice for some feedback from other collectors.

And focusing just on the seller for high prices on ebay and the FS forum is missing half the equation. If nobody bought them, end of story. And if someone buys a zoa just cause it has a name, then that their bad karma to go through life as an idiot.

Well put. Amen to that.

it seems what is coming in here is the law of supply and demand

if someone is willing to pay 99999.99 for a single polyp, then that is a good price for it. Buyer and seller are happy.

If you see a polyp that you wouldnt pay $1 for, so be it. don't buy it. Someone might, but you dont have to.

If everyone marks up their polyps 5 million percent, and no one buys them anymore, prices will come down.

why does everyone care if joe schmoe down the street paid $500 for a polyp? It's his money, and if he is willing to part with it, who are you to say that he can't buy something just because it has a name?

I don't see anything bad going on here. The posts might get annoying, but deal with it. Welcome to free trade.

BTW, i hear the reefers in china don't have this problem....they all just share

I think the problem isn't really that everyone thinks their polyps are different...everyone just wants to say they named a polyp! Who wouldn't want something named by them or after them like "Tub's Blues"?

Things are great Bill. I've neglected my tank a bit, but now I have a little more time. I'm switching from 20k to 14k halides on my zoa tank. PM me with the progress on your tank!

I really don't care about this stuff all that much either. Except for that I had a deal made with a guy for 10 polyps of something and then he came here and asked for an ID. After that, he tripled his price on me...

seemed a well said response to me...did you reply to the wrong thread?

His response seemed to be mostly about defending high prices of zoanthids. I thought this thread was complaining about the amount of ID threads, not prices.

sounds like it...or maybe just some people think that

It's definitely a case by case basis. I've been around the zoanthids forum for quite a while and a lot of people, as of late, have been trying to profit off of good buys they get from LFSs. You can't blame them, but unfortunately my LFSs don't get good shipments of zoanthid colonies.

If I found a colony of Orange Envy's at a LFS for 30 dollars, I would certainly make some nice trades and sell a few after they had acclimated to my system.

hello guys, im with the LPS forum and im one of the people that posted an id thread yesterday, now im reading this and i understand why one guy was upset ( no need for nasty sayings though ) but im sorry for you guys, it was not my intention to sell anything and i totally agree with you , lets enjoy the corals instead of fragging them in little pieces, i swear that i did it out of curiosity cause im not a big fan of the funny names people use in this hobby to make huge profits, i love the names, dont get me wrong but just for fun or a way to differentiate the colonies, so im sorry of what is happening in this forum, best of luck.
