No Polyp Extension

I have a coral beauty. Most of my SPS pop, some slightly extend.... Time to yank him?

Has never taken to pellets...mostly see him pek at the glass, rock, and algae on snail shells....

Well maybe the flame will have to find a new home then. I didn't think he was bothering anything.

I wouldn't pull out a beautiful fish like a flame angel just yet without actually figuring out what your problem is. IMO, if the polyps are retracted fully because of a picker, the flame would be doing some obvious damage. Angels have really strong jaws and if they are pickers than you will know it.

I have lots of pickers in my tank. If they are acting natural, then all angels will pick. All my tangs as well have learned to pick and some of them make a living out of mouthing slime off of the corals. Some like my Emperator Angel bite the ends off of the coral and the damage is odvious. Some like the Golden Angel and Golden Flake Angel do less odvious damage and the tangs and rabbit fish do no damage at all. But, they all pick and they all mouth the corals. If you fish dont do this its only because they havent learned to do it.
If the corals are healthy and there are enough of them compared to your fish load then they should be fine with the fish nipping and mouthing them. I think its actually good for them but... However, if you are not fine with it then yank the fish.

That's not necessary true especially when it comes to dwarf angel. Many dwarf angels do not physically take a bit out of the SPS; they only nip at the polyps. The nipping behavior is not even enough to cause the SPS corals to slime (like a physical damage or a chemical warfare normally would). Most dwarf angels are not SPS predators.

I agree with this, but you have to have a high coral to fish ratio (such as you do). My tangs also pick at my sps, but the flame angel was most definately keeping polyps retracted.

Brings up a question for me because I love angels (who doesnt). Did you add these before or after your tank was packed with corals?

They all grew in together. The big nippers didnt do so much before they were adults and they were all juveniles when i added them to the tank. However I have never kept angels in anything smaller than a 180 and i would consider that too small for adult large angels after watching and keeping them in the larger system.

Strangely enough I was reading this post while doing water tests yesterday to see why my pocci was having issues and then later last night observed my newer yellowtail pygmy angel munching on it and my acro. Oh well, I knew I was taking a chance when I got him, but I've had good luck with other angels in the past.

PE not amazing for me either. I run gfo but I added that 2 months ago? Is there is still dust in the water could I use carbon to take care of it?

If you're worried about GFO dust you could try PO4x4 which is essentially GFO encapsulated in a polymer. It looks almost like tiny caviar. I like it because one small rinse in the reactor and it has almost no fines left. You do need to modify most reactors to keep it in place because the beads are so small. I use a simple TLF reactor with fine filter bag mesh over the sponges on either side. Works like a charm.

I added all the Angels as juveniles and they grew out together with the corals.

Well my flame angel is now banished to the sump. I picked up some frags and not even 24hrs later my sunrise now looks like this. The only frag, I looked it it maybe 3hrs before and it was fine, saw the FA hanging around it.

is that good or bad, impossible to tell from the picture. Have you had any luck gettin PE?

I am also curious, do you have a lot of LPS and softies in your tank(Xenia for example).

I know this thread has some age on it, however what was the final outcome? Did the PE come back after the flame was removed
