I have a very mature (12+ years) soft coral dominated 225 gallon reef tank with many sarcos and sinularias. I made the changes listed below in a short period of time about 6 weeks ago and most of my sarcos have not had significant polyp extension since. No impact to any sinularias or LPS and some sarco cuttings appear fine while parent has no/little polyp activity.
Added calcium reactor.
Added second mp40 Vortech. Too much flow?
Added new sinularia, nepthea and sarco. Chemical warfare?
Upgraded lights from MH to LED strips (which made the tank brighter) and increased peak lighting period.
Added several new fish -- 2 tangs (purple and desjardini sailfin) and several clownfish (that mostly avoid the sarcos).
Each of these things alone could be the cause of the problem or the combination could be the problem.
I've done several water changes and swapped out the carbon.
Not sure of water parameters but assume they are normal as everything else looks good except for the polyps.
Aside from the polyp issue, all sarcos are robust and upright and look fine. Most have bright skin while one looks like a layer of brown algae is growing on its crown.
Any ideas? Suggestions? How long do you think this could go on for? Appreciate any input.
