so starting about 11 PM last night until about 10 AM today I had no power. The tank went from 79 degrees to about 70. I boiled water using a gas stove and filled up plastic baggies with it and floated them in the tank to slow down the drop but I had no generator no pumps running nothin.

It looks like everyone in the tank made it. I think another few hours and it would have been gone.

Good work!

On Feb. 14, my area of Maryland had a severe (for us, at least) ice storm with very low outside temperatures. We lost power for over 12 hours.

As soon as the power went out (around 5 AM), I took the large down comforter from the bed, removed the light fixture from the aquarium, and covered the aquarium with the comforter. The comforter was quite large and covered all four sides of the aquarium.

The temperature in my kitchen (where the aquarium is located) got down to 55 degrees but the aquarium only fell to 77.5 degrees.

Everyone survived!

Colder temeperature holds more oxygen. Heating the water without circulation is the last thing Id do. I would just stir the water with a spoon every hour.

I don't know how far you car is from your tank but I have used a power inverter and ran a cord from my car to my tank. This allowed me to keep the pump going and nost as $$ as a generator

I guess you could always take the battery out of the car -if you had to. I always wondered how long it would last. Hope I never find out! The idea is just to keep the basics going anyway.

You're not supposed to use extentsion cords with power converters...not sure why, but that's what the instructions say that came with my converter. Good idea with the down comforter!

I have 3x8000 watt generators... 1 for the house, 1 for the tank, 1 for neighbors and whatever else.....

My house uses natural gas. I plan on buying the kits to convert the gens from gasoline to natural gas... I also plan to back feed my AC panel with the first 2.

I bought a generator for this reason to protect all the money I have invested in my tank.

Amen to that, Thats one reason I bought mine.
