i have no room under my 92 corner stand for fuge and don't want to slop up finished basement w/ a fuge out in open. my only option is to grow something in seperate compartment of sump w/ no sand or rock in it. by the way, main display is a 3-5" DSB using pure aragonite sand. i was thinking of trying to grow something in sump compartment which houses micron sock. this compartment is divided from where skimmer is and return pump inlet. can i successfully grow some kind of macro around sock to export nutrients? if so, what? don't want something which spreads like crazy? lastly, would it even be worth it doing it this way?
thanks

You want it to grow like crazy! That way it exports nutrients and even pulls out excess toxins, etc. Perfect species group for your application is Chaetomorpha. Put a decent bright daylight r38 PC bulb on it (LOA; built-in reflector flood lamp), 75 to 85 watt equivalent (uses way less wattage). The chaeto will grow according to the amount of light and nutrients available to it. Pull chunks of it out, about 1/3 of it per thinning, to export the stuff and stimulate new growth. This group of brillo pad shaped macros are relatively non-toxic (don't tend to sporulate or use competetive exudate chemicals to beat up on other plants, just like corals do to eachother).. Toss it in the trash or pass it along to other reefers who need it.

i think i'm gonna try it, thanks. that's the 1 which was recommended to me at LFS.

That can help some to stabilize PH by processing CO2, so sure, lots of folks do that.
