No sand or sand bed

Ok...But what really messed my mind was the nitrates high and phosphate low. I thought they were supposed to be more like the same.

They can measure different levels bc source can be different. Phosphate can come from using unfiltered tap water, KH buffers, activated carbon and some say from flake foods. Are you using RODI water?

Whereas Nitrate is byproduct of fish waste and uneaten excess food, its the final byproduct of the nitrogen cycle...so basically Nitrate is mostly from organic waste. If u overfeed and too often, u can/will have high nitrate. How often do u feed and are the fish eating everything in few mins?

An experienced hobbiest, soulpatch, recommended keeping nitrate levels near 0 for one year in order to control algae and prevent algae from establishing in my tank.

Well, from all of the above, I just use some pellets. But I surely don't overfeed. But I only use pellets one or two times a week. Otherwise I use frozen food rinsed in water. I have a RoDi and use it with Red Sea Pro salt. I do not have any chemical filtration. My filtration is relying on my skimmer, filter sock cleaned every 3 or 4 days and a uv filter. Nothing added besides what comes in the salt.

I was really aiming on zero nitrates and phosphates for quite a while. To get a good established tank. Not succeeding though...[emoji19]

Having some nitrate is ok, just not anything over 30ppm unless u start vodka dosing (which is recommended for advanced hobbiests, which I'm not) don't think ur gonna get zero nitrate. If u'r interested to learn about it, Meleev explains how it works. He couldn't get 0 nitrate until he started Vodka dosing, until then he always had 25-30 Nitrate.

the only thing that ever ate GHA for me was a yellow tang, no snails. Others have said emerald crab is good for GHA.

Dont get so caught up on the #'s (0 nitrate), if ur tank inhabitants are healthy and growing and ur water parameters are stable it should be fine.

Well I wouldn't be so concerned if everything was ok, it's just that the fish and hermits are fine, but beside a xenya that was a hitchhiker on a rock, I can't have any more corals.

Sometimes I just get lost...if on one hand water parameters don't seem that off, on the other, corals don't survive.

My tank has about a year. I use a Chihiros Led setup for marine tank, a tunze 9004 doc skimmer, one eheim 2000 for circulation (now I have very few rock I took out the other one so it doesn't get dirty). Eheim heater, filter sock, jebao 2000 dc for return, tmc vecton 600 uv (just a few days running), and a fuge with some ruble, sand and the killer hermits.

As for the corals that died, I tried a caulastrea, ricordea, protopalytoa, discosoma and a seriatopora frag...it just get disappointing

any powerhead to move water in tank?

Yes, for the moment an Eheim Stream 2000. I had another one, but the dt is almost empty...so one seems enough for now

I also have as livestock 2 clowns, 1 blue damsel, 3 very bad *** hermits, 1 strombus and 2 ceryth.

Some of those corals require lot of work and good stable water parameters. Next time ck out Liveaquaria and try some of their "beginner corals" http://www.liveaquaria.com/product/aquarium-fish-supplies.cfm?c=597+2856to become familiar and comfortable taking care of coral

Corals use Alkaline and Calcium in addition to good lighting for growth. Here's ur target water parameters for reef system http://www.liveaquaria.com/PIC/article.cfm?aid=89

Have u been testing water for Alk & Calc in addition to nitrate and phosphate? When u add corals, u should start dosing Alk & Calc, I use 2-part dosing from "ESV B-Ionic Calcium Buffer System". Here's a very good article by Joe Jaworski about 2-part dosing and how it works. https://joejaworski.wordpress.com/2014/05/19/the-right-way-to-use-2-part-additives/. Some will argue that Alk & Calc do not need to be added equally but I disagree and have been dosing in equal parts. U can figure out how much Alk & Calc ur corals are using in ur tank by 1st measuring the Alk & Calc level of freshly made saltwater then compare that to the Alk & Calc level of ur tank water. The difference is how much Alk & Calc ur corals r using and must be replenished via 2-part dosing.

Also lights must be on for 8-10 hrs/day for coral. When u add coral, the tank placement is very important as each coral has diff needs, i.e. strong water flow vs low water flow, strong light vs low light.

After ur tank has been cleared of GHA and water parameters stabilized, please take ur time and try with few (1-2) of the hardy easy to raise corals. Dont try corals like the Bird's Nest which is harder to take care of.

2 of those powerheads should create good water movement. were they aimed at the rocks?

Well, I had one behind the rocks, another facing the front glass and the return pump kind of downwards...in such a small tank (60 cm wide) everything was in a roller coaster.

One thing for sure, I'll only add another coral after everything is stable. I don't have any other test besides phosphates and nitrates, and that is a huge flaw. I thought I could rely on good salt and rodi water. I always check the tds on the rodi water and sometimes do the nitrates and phosphates tests just to be sure. But I'll have to invest in a chemistry test kit, for sure.

Great to hear! also with a 180 liter ttl water volume, your system is going to require more attention/maintenance than a larger system. 180 liter is going to be less forgiving as far as water parameter changes so requires frequent testing etc.

Yeah, for sure. I admit I'm not lazy with maintenance. I like taking care of the tank and have everything clean. I have been doing at this time 2 wc per week of about 10%...
I have to get the tests. I'm sailing blind in here.
And thanks for sticking with me here. I really need help.

no worries, anytime. if u'r interested in Deep Sand Bed (DSB) as an additonal natural filter, u should look into it. http://www.ronshimek.com/deep_sand_beds.html
NYSteelo has a lot of very good videos on Youtube and here talks about DSB
