No Water Changes!

Well, it depends. I think one of the most sensitive to water quality would be SPS. But that also depends if you have enough lighting and water movement. When you get to the harder corals to keep, it is not only water quality you have to worry about, a lot of other factors come into play.

And I think you can even keep SPS without water changes if you dose for calcium and alkalinity and magnesium. With a mature reef, you can get away from doing water changes if you don't feed a lot. You will get into trouble as you increase your fish bioload. Especially fishes that poop alot.

Also, long term, you may run into old tank syndrone if you let your tank get filled with detritous. It will slowly overtake the amount of nutrient you can biologically filter.

Jimbo327,

It seems your taking this all a little too personally. You did realize that only the top line was specifically aimed at you, right?

Sorry, I can't tell who you are talking to specifically. Since you addressed me on the 1st line, I thought you were talking to me. But we are basically saying the same thing, so it's no biggie to me. But next time, if you have a point, just say it. No need for the innocent questions and baiting.

Seriously, I don't even know what you are talking about anymore. We both agree that no water changes is fine if you know what you are doing. So let's just leave it at that. Only difference is that you believe elements in the water is nonsense, and I'm saying elements is still not well understood yet. Now we can both go back to scrapping our coralline off our tank glass. Peace.

I honestly can not express just how many new things I see in the tank weekly.

Lets see some of this growth and no more of this petty BS. Back to the tank!!!! PICS PICS PICS Please.

Jimbo, Again, your jumping to conclusions that suit you. You're like a big bullfrog...jump...jump...jump.... Besides that, your attempts to insult are infantile and ineffectual.

In terms of why we do partials, elements are nonsense. Partials should be viewed in terms of nutrient export not replenishing elements.

Corals rely heavily on zooxanthellae for their dietary needs and supplement by feeding on water born food sources.

If we look at modern trends in partial water changes, we find that many go with 10%. This figure is almost worthless, so it's very close to not doing a partial anyway. A figure closer to 30% should be viewed as a minimum, if you want a meaningful effect.

The key to Bogart80's success is probably his low bioload.

Jimbo, seriously, we'd all be better off if we tried to understand rather than argue. Just breathe and relax a little before you start whacking away at the keyboard, please.

Anyway...

I am currently at work all though this thread has become such an issue I thought I would come by to see what’s going on now.

At least with Bluemorningwind and Jimbo327 going at it I am not taking as much heat for my W/C :D

I will try and get some close up of my tank and all the strange little creatures in it tonight and post.

Does anyone else notice the lack of coral growth? I would think if he did monthly water changes his corals would be thriving instead of just maintaining.

I apologize Bogart. This is your thread. I was only trying to be helpful. I will take our conversation offline through PMs.

I think thats one of the main points everyone is trying to make here. The coral growth is slow because Bogart is running a low nutrient and low element import into his tank. Of course he would have better growth with regular water changes but the point of his/her thread was to say "Hey, my animals are living in my tank that recieves no water changes!" He's not condeming or plugging this mode of husbandry, hes just letting everyone know that this is how he runs his system.

I think if you added a trace element and amino acid supplement to the tank along with the Ca/Alk additions you would see much more growth in terms of corals and you might get a couple other reefers off your back;) . But, its your tank and your system, do as you please and continue to post updates and pics. This has been a very thought provocking thread and kudos to your success Bogart!

I see no point in giving someone kudos for being lazy and that's all this thread really comes down to. If you're unable to spend 20min a week to do a simple water change, then find a new hobby or keep it to yourself. This is no different that some kid making a "Look I kept a tang in my 24g for 5 months!" type of thread.

I have seen others claim this too and 6 months latter tank wipe out. Water changes are not just to add things it is to remove things.

I also agree why come here and brag about neglect of a living animal....

most of what you have will also grow well in toilet water but I can not tell what the coral is on top? or is it an anemone? looks to have a purple base which would most likely be a magnifica which requires a very large tank with high flow and high light...

I almost feel this is a bait thread to cause trouble...

Bogart80,

I am glad you shared your system and maintenance with us. I believe there are some great tanks out there were people do not do what changes, such as yours. I also believe that many tanks could run fine long term without a water change.

I believe that if people could have lower maintenance tanks that more people would/could get into this hobby. Now I don't know if you can run a tank forever without a water change, but I am glad there are people out there do things a little different (than most) and I am glad you have shared the info.

I know I have PM'ed several people who do no water changes, but they don't want to post for the fact they believe they will get flamed. I believe this tread kind of proves that.

Keep up the nice tank!

Cheers,
Chris

Flame fest indeed, although I dont think anyone should be ashamed of how they treat their tanks, that is if it looks decent. Its a different story if someone had a killer microalgae problem and they boasted about not doing water changes, but if the tanks spotless and all inhabitants are healthy then lets see some pics!!

hey man, i completley agree. water changes are over rated. i maybe change my water every few months or so when im bored. its true, established tanks are mini ecosystems, and take care of themselves. well done

wow, i am new to this sight, and i posted a comment here, and now after reading all 4 pages of this thread i am regretting saying that i change my water every 2 months or so, some of yall are harsh, the man was just saying what worked for him. so who is going to trash talk me for my post? like i said im new to this sight, but i dont like what im seeing with all this trash talking, its a sight to learn, not to trash talk, thats what high school kids do on there little myspace pages. common now, where adults here
