Noisey overflow

Last night I finally got water in my tank. The overflow is extremely loud. I had to unplug the pump so I could sleep. I did some research on how to quiet it down. Just can not seem to find any plans how to build one of these systems. Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks Matt

How many holes you got in your tank? You could search for the "herbie overflow" if you got an extra hole.

I ended up finding plans for the durso drain. It was extremely easy to build and cheap. The noise level is def a lot better.

Those are great, but the Hofer Gurgle buster is even quieter, and you can still put on filter on it to keep things out of it, one thing you can not do with the durso. Another thing about the Hofer, is a built in safety feature, in that, if the water gets too high covering the air hole, a full siphon is created, keeping it from overflowing. HERE is the link to it.

you will also be able to quiet it down more by adding a valve on your return line and slowing down the flow a bit . sometimes it takes just a small amound of flow reduction to really quiet things down .
what size/flow is your return pump ?

Gurgle busters are good. Depending on what noise you're getting, you might also check your standpipe height -- if you minimize the distance from the teeth of the overflow to the water level inside it, you'll quiet the amount of splashing as water flows into it.

what type of tank is it and is is an overflow that was factory installed or a glass holes type . a little info could help as some overflows wont handle or are very close to their limit with a mag 9.5 in my experiences .with thw glass holes units they are rated at 700gph but at their upper limit they are loud for sure . even a picture would help if you can snap one .

When you use the valve, you are removing the air draw aspect of the design, and you will lose the built in safety feature.

What I have done, is using a dual overflow drains, I use a standard drain pipe and using a valve right below, create a full siphon and slow down the drain. The second drain is my backup, using a Hofer gurgle buster. If for whatever reason the first gets clogged, the second one with the Hofer will start to drain, and if it gets clogged, then it will create a full siphon.

I just could never get two hofers in an overflow to work together. I setup the hofer first, then the standard drain. Absolutely no noise, dead silent. Both have screens around them to prevent any debris or animals, and the standard drain has a bio ball on top to direct flow. The standard drain can handle the load by itself, as it has no air, and will flow what the pump puts out. I will take pics and a little movie and post later.
