Noisy overflow outlet

Hi guys,

Urgent question, I've just set up a tank. It is a AquaOne mini Reef 30g.
It is empty with tap water with conditioner just to clean the pipes( after i will remove it an use RODI water).

The problem is that the sump is making to much noise. The plumbing system uses a durso standpipe.

It is a splashing noise, i tried to extend the pipe to submerge more in the sump but the noise continiues...

Please if anyone deal with that before HELP ME !!!!
My wife is almost killing me!!! :furious:

(the tank is in the living room, but is a quite small apartment, we can hear the water splashing from our bedroom)

Thanks for saving a marriage .. lol :)

post pics, or a video.
Simple answer is, if water is splashing, you need to stop it from splashing. Not sure what else anyone can say.

It may be something as simple as not enough water in the system. More water makes it less likely to splash. Just be sure in case of power failure, there is enough space in the sump to take up the water that drains into the sump.

You might also consider redirecting the pipe in the sump with a 45 or 90 elbow to push the water horizontally along the bottom, and away from any equipment.

here it is some photos!!!

Increase the water level in the sump. The splashing is coming from the water crashing over the baffle.

I'm no expert in all manner of sump design, but I think short end is supposed to be the return.

Duck tape is fine for water flow tests, but go to the hardware store, and get a proper PVC joint. The ducktape wont survive long.

Do you have a full side view of the sump showing all the baffles and whether some have space underneath or not?

Another idea, is your durso capped? Does it have a valve in the cap to fine tune the air flow? Quieting a drain and sump is about balancing air and water flow through the plumbing. A valve on the return pump would also be a good idea.

thanks for the help mate...
here it is a full picture of the sump, no space under the baffles.

the water level is now higher because i turn of the pump... (it is 1am here in australia... and my wife is trying to sleep ... lol)

my durso doesn't have avalve in the cap, just a small hole

I looked real quick at aqua one, seems like the whole system is pre-designed, so I'll assume the hole is the right size. So much for that idea.

Also, with the sump inlet pre-built in the corner, it's hard to mistake the in from the out. So that theory is gone too.

The only thing you can do is try and play with the water levels in the system and observe how it reacts. Perhaps the reseller has some suggestions, or someone who owns the same system can suggest a mod to calm it down.

Do you know exactly which area the splashing is coming from?

Is the middle section is designed to have some kind of media, foam, sand, rocks or anything that would calm the water?

yes... everything is pre-design... i choose it because i thought it was easier for a newbie like me !!! eheh

i will try to increse the water level a little bit an see how it reacts, i think i still have 2" to 3" of water level to play it without overflow the sump while the pump is turned off...

the splash sound is coming from the water tha cames from the display tank when it enters into the sump...

thank you so much for your help mate!!!

yes... the company(aquaone) suggestto use some media in the middle section of the sump... i am not quite sure what to use ... maybe i'll putsome filter sock with carbon... but not quite sure yet

No problem.

My bet is that the whole thing would benefit a lot from a valve on the return pump to slow it down a bit, and a valve on the air inlet hole to fine tune it. But someone who uses a durso standpipe will have to take over for that, as it's not the style of overflow I use. The noise is most likely because of the air and water mixing in the drain.

Your probably pushing to much water and need to slow the pump down. I run my pump at 75 percent or it will do that.

Agreed a valve would help. Also I'm not sure exactly how loud your current setup is but keep in mind that once you have salt water in the tank it will quiet down a bit.

+1 gate or ball valve on return. Also might want to consider increasing height in durso pipe. This would lessen the waterfall in the overflow box.

Make sure you test the system for power failure and make sure sump can hold the back drain water.
