Non-reef blue LEDs

Anyone ever add supplimental lighting that is not made specifically for reef keeping? I found these 30W blue LEDS for just $15 each and am interested in adding a set to my tank as supplimental lighting to my reef LEDs.

I'm working on lowering my white channels, and worry that reducing the white light without replacing some of the wattage with blue LEDs may cause my coral to brown out or slow their growing.

Any thoughts? I am on a budget for any tank upgrades at the moment, so trying to find an affordable add on light. If these would work, I think they'd be a great add on light for some additional blue power.

One must be reminded that there are 2 major LED light manufactures in the world. CREE in the US and one in China.
But light wave length is the same. Change the wave length is how you change the color, no matter who makes the LED. And they cost pennies to make.
Same with sound, change the frequency and you change the sound.

I used some 25W blue flood light LED bulbs in the past that screwed into a regular light socket. They were like 30 bucks and worked just fine.

Great, thanks for the replies. I had thought they'd be fine, but wanted to see what others had thought since I typically only read about lighting that is made for reefing.

I'm going to order a set to try out and see how it goes. If it works out well, I may just use these with some other lighting on a frag tank I'm planning out :)

yea, its the same old song and dance that goes on with a lot of different products.

Call it a Reef Light and quadruple the price.

Put Harley davidson on it and do the same.

Or BMW, Mercedes, which ever "high end" product you want to make money off of from people who want to throw their money away. We've been doing it to "named" corals for years.

I typically only read about lighting that is made for reefing.

"Reef" lighting is typically a specific collection of LEDs intended to provide the right spectrums/wavelengths of lighting for corals,etc...
It will have blues/purple then whites and a few green/red thrown in to potentially help color rendition.. Or similar..

A "plant" light will be all red/blue spectrums..

But a "blue" LED strip from whatever other hobby/market can certainly contain the same blue spectrum LEDs..

I installed a set of these lights to supplement my existing lights and they look pretty nice. They are a little more violet than the blues on my existing lights, but I actually like the look. As long as the coral health isn't affected I'll be happy. Can't tell the difference with a little white light, but when running all blues you can see the difference in spectrum. Have had them in for 2 days and everything seems to be going well. Only time will tell how the coral hold up.
