I recently set up my tank and bought live rock from a local fish store. Now that the tank has been up and running and cycled,a type of coral that was on the rock started to grow.

My question is what is it? Thanks

Hard to tell. COuld be algae. Could be red mushrooms. Possibly even sponge, but I kind of lean to mushrooms.

I have the same thing and have asked many people and most all say its algae. I have done a lot of looking on the internet and there is over 6000 kinds of red algae alone. I do not think it is bad though. If yours is like mine it feels kinda rubbery and stays on the rock. At first some people freaked out and told me it was slim algae, but it's not. I have left mine alone now and don't have any problems and it has not spread anywhere else. I think it adds color and I like it.
