noob starting a 10g false percula tank

hey. I am 15 years old and am completely new to saltwater fishes. Ive had a freshwater tank for 3 years.

Recently i set up a 10g saltwater tank. After cycling for 2 months, i put a pair of false perculas,one bigger then the other, which im hoping to mate. I also have a red dotted blenny in the tank. I just ordered 30 pounds of live sand and it comes with 5 dawrf hermits. I WANT A REEF. but i dont know if i can afford one just yet. Is there a way to atleast get my tank to look like the big boi reefs with some hardy "cheap" corals or something. I also have 4 pound of live rock.

I would also recommend a larger tank. You can upgrade to a 30 for a small amount of money.
 
be cautious about adding any live rock or sand now that you have fish and other livestock. You'll want to be sure it doesnt have die off that will spike the toxins.
 
I would add nice base rock and a few very small pieces of live (after cycling the live in another container).

not sure what you have for lights..but toss a cheap PC light on there and add some zoas, shrooms, few softies and you're on your way.
small tank..just go out and get another 10lbs of LR and you'll be better off.

I live in parsippany, nj im not sure if any stores here sell what i want.

I have so-so lights and a powerful power head. By lights i mean 2 yellow light like you would have in a room which came with my tank.

Can i keep some zoanthads with this light??

i would rather not buy the coral and have it die in my tank.

if you are talking the screw in 5 watt incandescent, that will not work at all. I would not get any corals. you'll need to get a new lighting system if you do want corals, but a small pc fixture should be reasonably cheap.
 
If you can afford a PC fixture i suggest that. Maybe a 30-60 watt kind.
if not get a NO light fixture from walmart or petco and get the 10K light bulb they sell seperate. I had an anemone for 8 months under this light that more then tripled in size. (bubble tip)

10 gallons are great. I had the exact same tank as you! 2 O. clowns, neon goby and bubble tip anemone. filtration - 1 lbs live rock, 2" sand, HOB mechanical filter.... that was it.. was the healthiest tank i had at the time. lol
 
you can get a cheap jebo power compact fixture on ebay, somebody gave me a free fixture (work at an lfs) and I have no complaints other than it only has one switch and plug for both actinic and 10k bulbs.
 
You do know that the "live sand" will need to cure just like rock.

Do you have anyplace to keep the fish for a couple of weeks?

yes, for the live sand i have another container to cure it. but finally, I MIGHT BE ABLE TO AFFORD A NEW TANK. there is a 30 gallon tank selling and i think ill get it. Its about 90 bucks and comes with everything i need. I might need new lights thouu again. This would be a great new house for my clowns and blenny. Except im going to cycle it for a month or so, but then, i think this new tank is gonna rock. You guys have taught me alotta things about my tank.

Congrats on the system. I'm 14 and I have a 65 Gallon Mixed Reef. I Have Power Compacts on mine. The first tank I had was a 30. It was fun for a while, but eventually There wasn't any room for anything else. So I tore down my cichlid tank, and set up a reef. It's great. I have a bunch of Mushrooms, Some Zoo's, and a Montipora as of now. I also got a Kole Tang, and a Bluethroat trigger in there. I'm going to upgrade to a 280 in about 2 years. You might want to save up for a 55 or 60 instead of getting the 30, because more room is always more fun to play around with. Good Luck!
 
:thumbsup: Your lighting options are much better with a tank that size as well. Try to find a local club. It will really help you to see other peoples tanks in person.
