Noob

I have a pleco in my 48g bowfront that is approaching 1 1/2 feet, cant find anyone that wants to take him. His poop is easily 6' long (sorry for the visual), running threw filter media like crazy trying to keep up with him!

Keep him with a Convict Ciclid that is 6-8", Some sort of mini pleco thats only an inch or so and gets in all the nooks and crannys, ...had 3 nice sized Silver Dollars but the filter seized up and oxygen depleted a few nights ago and i lost 2 of the SDs =[ Also had a dino bichor that was close to 1', after 4 years he discovered he could jump out the top and i did not find him in time...

Kept an African clawed frog for 5 years, called her Mrs. Piggy, she was huge! Loved feeding her earth worms and feeder fish... Unfortunately they are notorious for getting themselves stuck behind tank heaters

And thats a reasonable price, personally the DIY aspect is one of my favorites of this hobby and I do not think i will ever buy a tank stand. I'd put together my own tank if it was cost efficient but its not, and chances are i'd screw at least the first one up =]

Oh also i see the LFS quote doesn't include live rock, and it took me by surprise how expensive it can be, think i have spent more on rock than anything else in my tank.

But i will say i have had more enjoyment discovering unknown life in some of the more impressive rock than anything else in my tank. Aquascaping is a hole new game in marine aquariums as well, lots to consider! Solid tip, buy some acrylic rod (or cut apart a plastic coat hanger =] ) and drill holes in your base rock to "link" peices together. Allows for creativity as well as protects from cave ins. Another good thing to use is called "eggcrate". Its sold at most hardware stores as a "light diffuser" and is basically a tight checkerboard pattern plastic sheet that is reef safe and you can use to make little "platforms" for corals and building rock caves. Last thing you want is a cave in!
 
30 gal tank is having trouble. In the last 48 hours, 2 dalmatian mollies and a creamsickle molly started swimming strange, laid on the bottom then died. The creamsickle had brown on the edge of his tail fin, maybe fin rot.... The water has a green tinge to it and I scrubbed some slime off the glass. Water has lots of small debris. I trimmed back the plants, 30% water change and vacuumed the gravel. Slime hasn't come back but nothing else has changed. No distress signs in 12 hours.
 
Oh no...sorry to hear it. I hate when they seem perfectly fine then, boom, you start losing a couple here and there. Hopefully the water change helped. I've been there with ich...lost some of my favorite Congo tetras :( maybe cutting back the light will help with the algae bloom. Best of luck!
 
I was actually looking into a three day cover up to get rid of the algae. I'd rather get some Singapore shrimp. My wife wants a lobster (crayfish) but I think it would eat the guppies. I considered putting one in the big tank but the first time he attacks one of my angels or ghost Knife, I'll throw him in the college pond.
 
That just happened to my grandparents tank. All the other fish are fine but one species all started acting funny one after the other and withing 24 hours of acting up they died. Lost some color but other than that i could not help them. Did the same as you, changed out water and cleaned up a bit, but they keep great care of the tank.

I can make a holster for anything, I need something to mold the holster around. I don't currently own a kahr similar to the k9 or have any blue guns for it. Let me do some research and see what I can borrow/rent

Thank you. I am excited and nervous about a big reef tank, its a lot to manage and a lot of equipment. I would love a nano tank for the bedroom too but it isn't a priority. An octopus tank (future use of my current 65 tank) is what really excites me.

Another subject, the lethargic creamsickle molly is doing better today. She is eating better and more active. While searching the tank for more fry I saw her scrape up against one of the tank decorations. Red flag went up and I took a much closer look at her, two white spots on her tail. Its really hard to spot on the creamsickle and dalmation molly. Ich treatment started. Found one more fry today. Still several fish ready to pop.
 
You could just acclimate those mollies to saltwater :)
As far as being nervous about the switch, I completely understand because i switched after 11 years of freshwater. To my surprise, it was easier than I thought it would be. It does require a bit more attention than freshwater in some areas, but to me its well worth it.
 
This mornings update, the Ich bothered molly is still about the same. She is staying near the bottom and in decorations. I haven't seen and scraping today. On the other hand, 2 guppies died last night. No signs of Ich, one had a red spot under its skin. I don't know if they are sensitive to the Ich treatment (i did half dose due to having a scaleless fish).
 
My wife gave me a thumbs up to get a small reef tank (5 gallons or less), the search begins. There doesn't seem to be a lot of used ones out there....that must be a good sign.
 
Just an FYI the smaller the harder!

Sure after 75-90 gallons the cost starts sky rocketing. But you will be much more prone to crashes and other issues with a nano.. I would reccomend a 20 or 30 if you want to start small and atleast have the water volume to keep things stabalized


If she is set on the <5 gallons, she didnt say anything about a sump size did she =]

5 Gallon tank with a 30 gallon hidden sump? lol
