i have been keeping my new derasa in the rocks and he hadnt moved. i have a 29 gallon tank with 130 watts of pc lighting. i can move him onto the sand but how much light will he get then?? i have him about 4 inches below the ligths right now. also he move off the rock and was laying against the glass( didnt fully fall) could he die from this. thanx

If memoery serves right, clams want something they can attach to (like the sand bed), the fall won't hurt him, but the lack of light might (I had the same sized tank, and had to use double that lighting for my clams to be happy)

Deasa clams are the second least light demanding clam, put it on the sand bed. They prefer sand. I have one in my 29 on the sand bed and i also only have 130 watts of pc, he has grown almost 1.5 cm in 3 weeks.

I think, if memory serves, that deresa clams do not have a foot like the corcea or maxima. They need to be put in the sand, and there's no real reason to place him higher unless its for asthetics.

They start life with bysal threads and can attach, as they grow larger they lose the threads and become dependant on weight to hold them in place. I got mine at 2.5" years ago, once it reached over 3.5" it lost its threads. It has been in the sand many years now, and it about 10" or so in shell lenght.

FWIW as they get larger they require more lighting as the tissue becomes thicker and light doesnt get to the zoox as well.
